Cracked block

Anyone ever experienced cracks between the cyclinders on the pre 1991 cummins 6cta 8.3L engines. the pre 1991 engines have the thick wall liner witch interms means thinner block between cyclinders witch is prone to cracking and leaking antifreeze internally Cummins fixed this after 1991 figures my truck is a 1990. If you have what did you do to fix this any way with out a complete rebuild and new block looking for ideas here all help is greatly appreciated

I know the 5.9 cummins 24v "53" blocks were prone to cracking on the passenger side lower section of the external block. The fix for those was replacement really. But there's a few options. A very good welder can weld it back up with a nickel rod. But it's questionable at best if it will hold or not split even worse. There's another option called locknstitch which basically you drill and tap the block along the crack installing special inserts that pull the fracture back together.

Buy another cheap truck. Part that one out. 91 model or newer so you don't have a repeat.

Seen a bunch of them. No fix, just re-block. You know how many trash trucks I had to swing engines on because of that? Too bad you are in Md, I just took a 1995 C model out of a Grove crane and put in a 2014 ISL in it's place. The job is not AQMD funded, so the engine is being scrapped. Even has an MW pump on it!

I've seen 6CTA8.3 engines list here recently for $1000 with low miles in good condition. If me, I would buy that, replace as whole, and part out the removed engine sans block to drive the cost down to maybe $500. A day labor and it should be a done deal.

If all the components on your engine except the block are in good shape and the knocking one is cheap enough...$3-400 bucks or less, use the two to make a good one. and you could have some spare parts like a F/P, turbo, injectors, etc. You have to take it out anyway.

There is a chance that could be fixed BUT would cost more then it is worth, I have seen worse fixed in a HAVE TO situation.
