Been there - done that... I replaced the 6.5 in my 95 Burb last year. For the record, you can lift the engine out with the torque converter attached to it still.

While you are putting it together, relocate your PMD - save yourself the hassle now! Maybe even buy the IP without the PMD and get the relocation kit from Heath Diesel.

I would steer away from SSdieselsupply unless you cant find it elsewhere. They are known to not stand behind their product 'that' well.

I did mine cause the vac pump started making sounds and reading into it, I wasn't going to renew a weak system, instead I've used the Turbomaster and it sure was a different feel to it later as well, more responsive to the pedal.


Just went online and ordered the Turbo-Master and the pulley kit. $171 well spent. Thanks again.

I got the Turbo-Master kit in the mail yesterday and went ahead an installed it tonight, took about 10 minutes to put on. 14 psi boost pressure is the recommended max with the spring length at 1-3/4". I also got the Vacuum pump elimination belt. Very happy with it so far. See pictures below.

I just got me a new PMD because my CUCV II played tricks on me.
Every 100 meters it died!

Very annoying!!

Wish you good luck with the restoration. And I like the tan color.

Steve - can that software do the TDCO learn for a new IP?

and +2 on the 6.5 burbs... I own 2 of them!
Carcode ( OBD-2 Vehicle Explorer Scan Tool Browser ) can do the TDCO relearn as Steve already pointed out. However, the reccomended procedure is to use a "Key On Key Off" method to initiate the relearn and then check the setting with the scan tool or software.

I've used Carcode on my '96 Suburban and it works flawlessly.

Dieselplace.com has all the 6.5l info you will ever want or need. Just beware that alot of threads read like ads for the products being sold by vendors that support the site.

Make sure you install a boost gauge with that turbo master so you can monitor the boost. Otherwise you might be playing with fire. When my vac pump died, I opted to replace it instead of going the turbo master route.

Use a #9 resistor in your pmd and you'll be happy. I think the rest of the things to watch for or consider have been covered.

The "brown truck" just drop off my new injector pump tonight. It has a PMD mounted to the side with the # 5 resistor inside. I have a new, 6 foot extension cable/heat sink kit with the # 9 resistor in the new PMD that I will be using.

Planning to relocate the PMD to under the front bumper.

That is a great mod. The PMD's in the stock location nearly killed the reputation of the 6.5TD. I can't tell you how many people I've put DB2 pumps on the 6.5TD's for that very reason.

That's a pretty good set-up, but I would also install a mechanical temp gauge. I know there's already one in the truck but they are iffy at best, and temp and EGT is crucial, especially when towing. Being that you have the Turbo Master, it is really easy to melt one down if the EGT's and temp shoot up too high. They can/will do it very quickly if it gets too high. Setting the spring length on the TM just gets you in the ballpark, so you really need to watch everything closely at high RPM or under a load until you get it tweaked in. I'd cry if you killed that brand new engine, so imagine how you'd feel!;)

Lol, I'm still crying over my new 6.5L NA thats in my dually. The glow plug went into the piston. Only had about 150 miles on the engine.:sad:

Oh man - That sucks!:cry: Any idea of why/what happened?
Lesson learned......always use new glow plug. Engine started to knock so I pulled over. The tip of the glow plug was missing when I pulled the plug out. I then pulled the injector out and found only half of the tip inside. The other half went into the top of the piston.

I'm going to try and used parts from the old 6.5 out of the CUCV-II (only 16,000 miles on engine)to fix the "almost new"GEP 6.5 engine in the dually.

Then I will install the Banks turbo kit that I have.
