CUCV Integrated winch mount.

I had posted this in the vendors forum, then realized only vendors could vote in the poll.

A customer had seen a brush guard winch mount on a CUCV featured during a YouTube show "Dirt Every Day". He asked if I could make a mount like he had see on the show. I was able to reproduce the mount to the best of my abilities. This is what I was able to build for him.



I am testing the waters here to see if there would be any interest in a weld together kit, that you would install at home to your existing CUCV brush guard.
At this time estimated sale price of the kit w/ shipping to the lower 48 states will be $400.00

The kit will include;
a universal winch plate precut to fit the CUCV factory brush guard,
vertical trusses,
horizontal trusses,
flat strap precut to length
Assembly Illustrations.

I am also contemplating building brand new reproductions of the Factory CUCV Brush Guards.
with or without the winch mounts integrated into them. I have not calculated exact cost at this time for the reproduction brush guards.

What I need from you forum members is a show of interest. Please vote in the above poll. You can select more than one choice.

For a $40-60 universal winch plate, some pieces of flat strap and 4 triangles and a few other bits that look to be 3/16" cut out on a CNC plasma the price point at $400 is high for me.

A lot of people won't have the equipment to weld this which will increase the cost. I would engineer a mount that would replace the front shackle mounts, plug and play will get a lot more customers I believe.

I don't like using the brushgaurd for that much pulling. I think it is a week point I also think it messes up a good brush guard.
I know there are kits like what I built but nothing as over built as mine but I think heavy duty kits like my receiver mount and winch mount would be a better kit to sell. It bolts to the frame, you can remove the winch and store it so it does not get stolen. I plan to weld the bolts holding the winch to the plate, I just put the winch on there and have not done that yet. and also add a locking pin along with a chain or cable lock to the winch and frame.
the plate for the winch and receiver is 3/8 inch thick. the only part purchased was the 2 inch receiver from tractor supply I believe it was around $20. It is heavy and handles will be added to mine.
I think price wise the receiver mount is a better deal, I can also put a bike rack up there or my receiver basket or even a receiver to hold the cooler or spare tire. It has many options.
I do believe there is a market for reproduction brush gaurds. They are getting hard to come by. And it think there is a market for a heavy duty receiver mounts. most sold are not real strong and these receiver mounts are not just a cucv item

It's cool looking, but I don't think it'd be strong enough for winching a 5200lb+ truck.

I tought about the same kit and the lasercutted parts cost a quater of your price.

The winch mount integrated into the grille guard is plenty strong if done right. No need for all the excess and unsightly(IMO) strapping. There are ways to reinforce the grille guard and frame mounting brackets that provide more than adequate strength for the winch. Been building them similar for years with plenty of customer feedback. With exception of the truck with all the LED lights, all the winches are 9500 pounds. The other is a 10K


The cost is a bit excessive too. Again, just my opinion

I have not priced CNC plasma cutting, or water jetting in my area at this time that is why I stated this above.

I am conducting the poll to see how much interest there is in a kit, and if it is worth investing any more of my time and money into researching the cost of water jetting, or CNC plasma Cutting the parts. I have hopes that I can have the parts mass produced for a fraction of what it costs to do it by hand. Thus keeping the cost of the parts down.

I believe the winch mount integrated with the brush guard is probably a bad idea. My experience with winches mounted above frame rail height is that they tend to pull the truck down while winching which loads up the front suspension just making it harder on the truck and acting as lever in a sense. Where as the 50 dollar universal winch plate and 2 pieces of receiver stock bolted to it using the front shackle mounts seems to be perfect in my experience. That and if you measure it right it can go from the front to the rear shackle mounts essentially giving you a choice of either direction aslong as you have battery cable run to the rear of your rig. Lastly, its removable when you don't want it there. On the other side, I could see people buying the integrated mount just because its a cleaner look and because of the media representation surrounding it.

That winch mount on Dirt Every Day was likely the one Fred Williams built for his M1008. Chances are that he also wrote about it in 4-Wheel & Off Road.
I'm way too far behind on magazine reading to know, but he sent me photos of the winch mount when he built it and it looked very nice. Knowing Fred, it's also plenty strong.

Dirt every day is hosted by Fred Williams (sounds like maybe you haven't seen the show) so yes it's one in the same. You should take a look if you haven't seen it.

I like the reproduction brush guards. Everyone online wants $250+ for them without a bumper which to me is stupid money for something I still have to refinish or bend it straight again. I'd rather pay money for something new ready to paint and install.

I don't like the idea of the winch being up that high and far away from the frame. The leverage is high, it is smack in front of the grille blocking airflow, and I don't think the mounting is up to the task of winching. Seems like the factory guards have a hard enough time doing just the guarding of brush. I prefer to keep my winches tight in the frame rails.
