CUCV Lights and Horn

I am having an issue with the light system on my CUCV M1008. When light toggle to "service lights", the lights work, but the horn sounds the entire time, and something starts burning behind the dash. I don't see any splices in the wiring behind the dash, and it is hard to see what is going on with the wiring behind the grill by the horn, but I don't see any splices there. This is the last major thing I need to fix in order to pass inspection and get her on the road.

Any thoughts?

Yep. Good news: It's a well-known issue. Horn diode. Unless you are planning to use military radios in combat, cut the diode off and throw it away.

Take a look in the Helpful Stickies for the "CUCV Melting Headlight Fuse and Horn Circuit fix" thread. It's a long thread that explains the whole issue in excellent detail. Well worth the time to read through every post.

Welcome to the forum!

Oh, and for those who are wondering why I just didn't link directly to the thread, it's because I want to direct the new guy's attention to the very helpful Helpful Stickies section so that he can see the good stuff that is there for him.

heh. Now I've got a new guy staying up all night reading stickies, and probably in trouble with his wife because of it.

A job well done, I say! :D

didn't have the issue as the OP but after reading this thread and the referenced stickies I removed the horn suppressor and cut out the diode under the dash then coated the ends in liquid electric tape. I also went ahead and removed the suppressor from the wiper motor as well

That simple fix did the trick...this forum is great. I am some tail lights, a windshield, window assembly and parking lights away from being VA inspected!!!

And fortunately I don't have to sleep on the couch do to my late night sticky reading because my wife thinks our M1028 is Bada$$!
