cucv starts, runs rough, excessive smoke then dies 2-5 min

New IP, slightly advanced past the mark, new injectors, new fuel filter, all new return lines, no air in the system, plenty of fuel pressure at the lift pump. I start the truck, it runs rough and smokes ALOT! The only way I can keep it running is with my foot on the pedal. After running for 2-5 min it dies and will not restart until it gets cold. Thinking maybe the temp sensor in the pass side head? Not allowing the IP to retard back to normal? Thought the IP had a blockage in it? Looks clean inside.
Replaced the temp sensor with a stock 6.2 from the local parts store and the fuel shutoff solenoid won't open. Plug the old one in and it opens. Runs but smokes bad still and dies after 3-5 min. Seems like the IP is advancing itself to the point were it won't combust any longer...
Any suggestions?

New IP? Or new to you? Are you sure it is a new pump? It may be a new one that sat on a shelf for 20 years. Then it is no longer new inside. I don't want to be harsh. But IP's have a shelf life. Did you replace the lift pump? That is advisable and a small cost when changing the IP. Just some thoughts of the subject. And put the timing line to line where it belongs and see what you have then.

Replaced the temp sensor\ diesel advance sensor in the PS side head and still no change...
Runs for 3-5 min and dies and will not refire. Tried advancing the IP a bit more and no change...
Glow plugs cycle, there's smoke coming from the tail pipe when I crank it...
Any suggestions???

I would run a compression check on it. Sounds like you have the fuel system covered, these old diesels are simple, the timing is set by IP, so if fuel is good and the IP is new timing should be good, compression is the last thing. Could be a slack timing chain. Do a cold compression check, and then start it and check it hot, see if there is a difference.

When I pulled the IP I looked at the timing chain and it had a little slack but hardly any. The truck ran really good before I replaced the IP, it just would not restart. It was the original IP and the truck has just over 100,000 miles.
Not thinking compression is the issue, thinking there is still something I'm the fuel system I'm overlooking.

I bypassed the temp sensor on PS head. Runs fine, been running for the last half hour. Retarded the IP a little now it dies after I rev it up, going to try and advance it and see what happens.

How did you bypass the temp sensor? Did you just connect the two wires together?
