CUCVRUS Repair Projects

A local body shop called and ask me to stop by today . They said they had an Army truck I sold years ago and wanted to know if I had any parts they needed. I stopped in and I knew the truck as soon as I seen it. It was a job I walked away from last year. I didn't want to get involved. They needed a few parts from a cab floor. Shame was I had a cab that had rust in the roof and cowling. Would have been easier to fix then one they have. I could never justify spending this much time and money on an old Chevrolet truck. No matter what it will rust again with a vengeance. So I could start a new thread about CUCVRUS repair jobs he refused to do. Could you imagine spending $4K + and still having an old rusty truck? I donated a used CUCV GM right fender that had a minor rust spot on the inside just to help out. Be Safe.
Think I need a new cab? The rust hole in the roof is a water leak

I think it may be cheaper.
Luckly there's some old chevys in the junk yard here that might have a clean ish cab. It seems the rust is getting worse by the day. I put my foot through the floor on the drivers side that's why there's a piece of tin there covering it up. There I'm looking for a factory 4 speed 4x4 cab to throw on it. I'm trying to figure out how I can get the title to be "1984 chevy c30"

Yes nothing like a visit to the salvage yard. I am fortunate to have a good friend that owns one. I was off work on Friday and decided I would help out while the crusher was running at the yard. The old Chevy truck was due to be recycled. Shame it had the factory bucket seats and console. I didn't need them and I made mention a few months back here about them. No replies or interest. Into the jaws of death the truck went. DSCF6922.JPGIt was cool windy day and no rain so it was a good day to visit the YOUPULLIT. I knew I could salvage a few parts from this abandoned vehicle before it met its fate. One of my needs a right rear corner from the bed. DSCF6897.JPGThe 1987 M1028 needs a little help in that area. Not a total bedside or a restoration. Just a little bit nicer right corner with no aluminum trim in it. Hello Mr. Milwaukee Sawzall. That was easy. DSCF6923.JPGDSCF6924.JPGI also salvaged the tailgate for my barn wall. It was rusty but it will look good as a modern art masterpiece. I was given the honors of stripping the abandoned vehicle. The bed was full of clothing and some parts. To my surprise I found a Remanufactured windshield wiper motor still in the box with a receipt.DSCF6928.JPGDSCF6929.JPGDSCF6930.JPG That truck was abandoned back in 2013 and has been sitting ever since. It's gone now. DSCF6925.JPG The moment before execution all is quiet. The Governor never called and the sentence was carried out. I will spare you the execution. DSCF6926.JPGDSCF6927.JPGYou can picture a knee high full size Chevy Truck. It was a sad day but I can't save them all. Next on the block was a 2001 Audi A4. It was next into the crusher along with a mid 90's Oldsmobile. The truck had a 350 with an Edelbrock intake and carburetor. It had headers and that is the reason it was in the condition it was in. The batterie cable shorted out at the starter against the headers and burnt it to the crisp. The hood could not be opened and the loader tore it open for me to look. Impound car no title so it is scrapped. Sad but true. Take Care & Be Safe. It did have a wealth of donor parts but stripping it was off limits. Say BYE BYE.

I was bored today so I took some Christmas lights and stuffed them in a old chevy gauge cluster

A little side tracked from my goal due to outside temperatures I thought I could free up some space in the shop and get my Honda tractor out of the way. First I need to refill the oil. that helps since I drained it last month. I took one odd QT I had in the cabinet and was going to combine it with the dregs from Rotella T gallons I saved and make 1.16 QT / 37.12 ounces. That is the capacity of the Honda engine. So I always measure it out in my measuring cup. Glad I did. I am NOT sure what happened here. I had this QT of oil from a road trip I was on a year or so ago. I poured it into the measuring cup and thought. DSCF6961.JPGDSCF6962.JPGWhat Happened here. Only explanation I have is it was in a box and the box was wet. But a sealed container. So NO I have no idea. Glad I used it on this application where I measure it and see it in a clear container. Not just open the QT and dump it in an engine where I would NOT see the contents. Imagine that diagnosis. Blow Head Gasket, cracked block. Always be vigilante. First time this ever happened to me. I also have an odd QT of NAPA 15w40. I will be pouring that into the measuring cup. Just wanted to share this oddity. Have a Great Day. How much is .12 ounce? Not worth worrying about I say. Be Safe.

With the wonderful Spring like weather I wanted to continue keeping ahead and cleaning up around the barn and barn yard. I had the right rear 1/4 bed panel that I chopped for the 1987 M1028. I wanted to eliminate the unusable parts and lighten the load for storage. I unbolted the floor section and the wheel housing section. DSCF7019.JPGDSCF7020.JPGVery nice inner panel cover. Could have used a few of them in the past. most a rotted away. I am not sure everyone knows but the bed side is bolted on and only has 4 small tack welds at the rear gate threshold and gate jam. A grinder and you just cut the welds. I used a thick disc because I was scrapping the floor section. Not sure where I will graph this panel so I saved the bed side section from the grinder. DSCF7021.JPGDSCF7022.JPGDSCF7023.JPGDSCF7024.JPGDSCF7025.JPGHey I hope that helps out someone that wants to do a bed side repair or replacement. The weld is needed to retain the proper bed and gate opening. I seen a few that just bolted the bed sides on and never welded. The bed sides were cracked on the bolted flange. I also removed the rear taillamps lense and scrapped the lense the housing was like new. The civilian tail lamp grounds thru the light harness as the military grounds thru the bed side hole on each side. Different taillamp harness completely. Sockets can be used and spliced in place. Good Luck and Be Safe. I want to do more outside work. Not sure if it will be CUCV related. It is my intent but everything else is equally as important at this point. DSCF7027.JPGDSCF7028.JPG

After several weeks of on and off turn signals working and not working on the 1987 M1028 I decided the time was to make the discovery of the issue. I used the test light a probed all the fuses that pertained to lighting. The turn fuse on the mid side left on fuse box seems to be the issue. It tested fine and I pulled it and replaced it the signals work again. I pulled the new fuse and replaced it with the old they still worked. It must have been a poor contact on the connections feeding the circuit but still allowed the current to pass thru both sides of the fuse. Not sure but I can not duplicate the error even trying to. So I am going to call it fixed. I may sand the contacts a bit. But maybe NOT. Be Safe Take Care. COVID 19 has people in a panic.

My Wife sent me some pictures on my Facebook page. Back in the day when I would buy 8-10 CUCV's at one time. 90765059_3358893294126120_1041822838236905472_n10 years after.jpg90982779_3358893184126131_5600481395131547648_nCUCV M.jpg91239835_3358892897459493_4672258985879928832_nFlipped M1028.jpg91054467_3358893240792792_1193372077831225344_nLow mileage CUCV.jpgI always bid on local cheap ones because I had access to lots of parts and these were 10 12 year old vehicles at the time. Like I mentioned at the time these were only 10 years old with many having less than 10K miles on them. Enjoy the pictures. Be Safe.

Today while working at the crusher I stripped several cars and at the end of the day a 1986 GMC 2500 2WD was carried up and set outside for me to strip next. I checked it out and it was a one owner local business truck that suffered most of the damage from exposure and being handled with a load. It still has a complete decent front end sheet metal. The doors are wasted and the bed is salvageable. I am going to pull the front end sheet metal and cut the rear section from the bed for an art project. I did get the wing vents and other odd fasteners and parts from it while I was waiting for more vehicles to arrive. This had factory delayed wipers and wet arm wipers. It was a basic plain jane Sierra. 2500 with a 350 4 bbl. I thought someone was looking for a bed. It is far from perfect but salvageable. Take Care and Be Safe. I will get pictures tomorrow. The interior is blue. The door panels were in the bed all busted up.

You have a pretty big collection. What happened to the one with the crunched cab?

That my Friend was over 20+ years ago and that was an M1028. I actually rebuilt that entire vehicle and sold it. Of course the cab was junk. That only had about 28K miles on it and I got it running and driving before I spent any money on it. The frame was not bent and everything worked fine. I sold the bed floor to a member here. It was 100% rust free. The cab floor I salvaged sections out of for a few years. That truck was wrecked on I 81 where you enter Virginia. It was during a summer back in the late 90's and the driver suffered heat stroke and ran off the road. It had a brand new dash pad and the front seat was in perfect condition. Long time ago. I liked getting the biggest wrecks I could and seeing the transformation. I still do but a much slower pace. Thanks for asking. Good times. Stay Safe.

Today I went out and located the M1028 DSCF7111.JPGDSCF7112.JPGalternator brackets. I can't post pictures in the PM so here they are. Everything as removed from the engine. I walked out to take them off and had some slight issues. I was muddy from the rain. I also had a 16mm socket instead of a 15 mm socket. But all is well. I will include a few new M10 flange nuts. I had issues with the 2 Gen 2 nuts and walked back in and got the 15mm socket. Let me know via PM.

First full week in the work shut down and staying busier now than when I am at work. This work is dirtier and more physically demanding. I feel like Wall E. But this old truck yielded a lot of bolts and odd and end parts. I cut the gas door panel out for some bartering item. I also gleaned everything I could and set the remains aside for more bone picking. The front end had a perfect right fender, hood and 4 headlamp core support. The left fender is salvable. 4 perfect 16" GM wheels. Just sharing in these rough times. The bed was savable till I took the Sawzall to it. Have a Great Day and Be Safe. Anyone ever need that little rubber up under the dash that stops the E brake pedal from slamming steel on steel? It had that also along with the door rubber bump stops. I think I need a door for my barn art. DSCF7128.JPGDSCF7129.JPGDSCF7130.JPG

Today after working my regular full time job again I returned to my irregular job and picked up my tools and all the Chevy truck parts I gleaned from my tour. I ask the owner about them and he said we will work it out. He was sad to see me go and said anytime I need work to come back. Well I have that going for me. Which is good. Ha Ha. Anyway it may look like junk but I see salvageable parts that can be reclaimed. It was fun but like all things it has come to an end. For now. Hope this virus goes away it is making life difficult for a person on the go. Be safe. Take Care. DSCF7132.JPGDSCF7131.JPG

I feel greedy scarfing up all these parts all the time. But this is the end of the line for them. I either take them or they are gone forever. And if I have them and someone else should need them they will ask here and other places. I see members in Germany and other countries that would love to have these extra parts. I have them. I don't do shows I just look at what people are asking for or need. I don't advertise because I get he said this and this guy has this for this much. I sell and trade as I want. Many times I would rather give it away and trade invaluable items. Be Safe and Take Care.
