Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone has registered a 5 ton in Iowa recently. I'm having a hard time getting a straight answer from the DOT as to what to do. They've said I'll have to register it as a CMV based on the weight, and that as long as it's for private use only that I can get regular plates, but will probably have additional paperwork and fees. They've also said that that I will need a CDL, and that I won't. I have a CDL-A, so that's not a problem, but it does add to the confusion. On top of that, my friend's dad keeps telling me that you just register it as a regular truck and pay based on tonnage. But he hasn't had one for decades, so who knows if that's still true.
Could any of you guys give me a run down of what the current process actually is? I know it's easier to get a title if I get one that's already titled in another state, will it also be easier to register it? Does it make a difference if I want to drive it out of state? So many questions, so few answers from the DOT.
Also, I wasn't sure if this belongs in the 5 ton forum, or the MV politics forum. I figured since it's specifically asking about a 5 ton, this would be the better place to ask. My bad if that's not correct.
