I have been doing some searches and what I was thinking was a camper trailer or popup or something like that not the box. I was originally considering the radio box but may be a slide in p/u camper?



someone does anything like this. Maybe i dont know how to use the search engine yet. I know lots of hits on the box one but looking for other ideas so i can keep the deuce a multi function truck and take the camper off the back when not needed.

I want something i could may be skin to be in line with the Deuce theme etc.

love to see some pictures.

im running out the door at the moment but look up uncle mikey i believe he has don it.. im also thinking about doing this as my uncle is giving me his slide in camper...

CJ454, The Camper unit is a Shasta !0 Ft. One of the advantages is you do not have to mount holding tanks under your truck. It works well, and the truck doesn't even know it's there. However, remember a camper is a week sister to a M109, but it does have all the gear and comforts in place at the get-go. Works well for me, I love it!. Also it's fun to intimidate pick up campers. [thumbzup]

do you have pics of how you have the underneath the camper frame set up? also the pics of between the cab and the camper? im getting my uncles slide in which i dont have the size but i think its a 10ft. i want it to be a quick on and off method so some research is getting done at that part

copy cat.. LOL.. :mrgreen: Thats what I want on and off. I want to have a self contained camper so I can keep my deuce usable with a bed when not camping.

I would love some detailed pictured of the mounting and stuff and how you put that rack on the front behind the cab.

Well, lets see if I can answer your questions. First, the rack behind the cab is sitting on an 75 gal fuel tank, and it holds 8 jerry cans and a cargo box. The fuel tank works well as a set back spacer for the camper. This allows the front of the camper cabover to be right at the front of the trucks cab, and not hanging way past the windshield, you have to remember how small a dueces cab is. It goes without saying having a lot of fuel is always a good thing.

I had to set the camper up a bit off the floor of the truck to get the cabover to clear the trucks roof. I wish I had made it a bit taller. A 2X4 ladder frame laying on the floor of the bed is just fine. This will space the camper up high enough and allows you to build into it supports between the bed side rail and the sides of the camper at floor level to keep the camper frpm shifting side to side while moving. Then all you have to do is secure it down to the bed floor. If the camper will allow you to, four bolts through the floor of the camper and then through the bed is best. I could not do that with mine and had to use chain mounts on the side rails, works O.K. but not as good as nuts and bolts. If you don't have a fuel tank behind the cab, remember you will have to build spacer supports at the front of the camper to the the front of the bed, like the side supports ( note, these will have to be stronger to hold the camper in place when stopping hard. But it will afford you more cargo space.

As to getting the camper off and on. I put mine on with a crain, and there it stays. ( poor mans M-109) I have found that the best I can find to remove it for an off/on set up would be a platform with some sort of rollers, built to the height of the bed that you could wench it out, and push it in. The short comming would be, if you have a plumbing that extends through the floor of the bed and floor of the camper, this would have to be removable also ( boy, that sounds like real fun )

I wish I had some photos of the build up, but they were lost. If you get into building on of these, I hope you have as much fun as I have had. Ever unit will be different and better for some reason. Best of luck.Take lots of photos,

thanx for the info. I was thinking (depends on what camper i find used) of building a frame with rollers. Using a P/U slide in or something like that but I know you lose room on the side for the wheel wells.

I know these type of campers have legs to help load and unload.
No crane for me.

the truck i am looking at has troop seats so i'll have to see how this works out. Looks like you have drop sides

it looks like alot of work but worth it.. i dont think you could do a total build out from scrape and make it look that good. the newer models have interior doors that open so you can get to those hidden wheel well places.. kinda neat.. i can think up of many things to add to the extra space that you would have. :)

Hey CJ454,

The frame will have to be made to hold the camper when off the truck, it will have to have rollers. However you will also have to have some sort of rollers mounted in the bed ladder frame, or you are back to lifting the camper up to get it out of the bed. That is why securing the camper to the bed is really important, because it will have to sit on a roller platform of some type.

Remember if you use a slide type of camper from a pick up, you will lose a bit of floor space in the camper, but you will gain a bunch of cargo area around the camper in the wheel wells areas. Great to store gear, tools, whatever. That area will be about 2 ft deep, 20" high, and about 10ft long. That is a lot of gear storage. In the right rear of my unit I have 4 propane tanks ( 80 lbs ) and they can't even seen from outside, still have 5 ft or more of the above size to store cargo. I think it is a good trade off. You only need a little floor to walk on, but you always will need as much gear as you can carry.

Don't even think of any form of camper jacks. The truck is way to tall and in order to build a set that would be safe, you would be better back with the crane. ( ask me why I know this ).

Also my truck is a troop seat unit, but if you could find a drop side, that would really be supper. I have thought about taking mine down at times in order to put a drop side bed in it's place. It would be a big job, but it would be worth it. That would help with so many issues I can't even say.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Camper trailer to fit a M101 or M105 trailer. That way I can park it out of the way when im not using it. Im going to build one when i get back from overseas next month using the rough deminsions from a S250 shelter but made from insulated pywood form laminated in fiberglass like a boat hull. Ill post pictures when im done but i dont think its been done before. Im wanting something that can be easily removed from my M101 when im not using it and if it works out ill transfer the idea to a M105. We'll see how this turns out i guess.
