These engines seem to have an issue with incomplete combustion below about 1000 and you get nasty wet oily goo in the exhaust. Aside from that, the engine vibes at any lower than 1000 are really hard on the headlight filaments. Take a walk around yours at 750 and 1000, its a lot smoother at 1000.

... pulled the ip head and the plunger was badly worn, way too much clearance. put another head on after fitting a plunger to it and started right up. changing the ip head was very easy and i would reccomend that over changing the whole injection assy.
I have an injector head that is extremely gummed up. Where did you locate a new head and what was the cost?

Tom hasn't been around for a while. Do a search for IP head and you should find a chineese manufacturer that makes them. That is what Tom used, I believe.
