Deuce multifuel engine damaged piston burned/ overheated!!

First I will say very nice forum with many many nice and hopefully informations!

I`ve got an engine prob with my deuce and I hope somebody could help me.I need the meaning from a diesel engine specialist.Sorry my english isn`t perfect.


I bought the truck last week and drove is back home (about 140mls) The truck does not run since 1996.The army rebuilt the engine in 84 so it does not have run many miles.There was a problem with the injection pump no fuel output.So I cleaned them and put it back in the engine (think fuel shutoff rod also stucks in off position) after that engine runs and sounds good.Starts directly no smoke,e.g.,but it does not have so many power like normal.You only fell that at the highway.I drove hills at the highway with only 35mph and rpm does not went over 2200rpm in 5th gear.Injector pump timing should be right I ""thought"".After 90miles at the Highway the truck stops, engine knocks, no power, black smoke and goes out, all was okay, expect the power loss.It happens in 5seconds, before that all was fine.I tried to start after 10minutes but the engine was blocked nothings turn over....No I parted out the engine and now what the problem was but what was the release?One piston number3 was totally burned, fall into pieces at the head and stuck at the top.The release wasn`t the head gasket (not blown), water was okay, oil press ok, no oil in water or water in oil, cylinder sleeve was okay, piston rings where okay, bearings main and rod where okay, valves/timing okay. What created that heat, I thought something heavily brake the piston but there was nothing, this could also not produce that heat.I think wrong injection pump timing could do that????If the piston is at TDC and the injector opens before TDC, it will produce many heat fastly?Also loss of power can occur.Cylinder No 1 front must be also new because aluminum pieces from the third fall into the chamber and damges the sleeve/piston (because the are at TDC at the same time)The rod is bend from No.3., because it stuck at the top.It`s no problem to fix the engine, but I don`t know what created that, so I don`t want that it happens again with the new parts....Thank you all

You have asked a good question, I do not have the exact answer. Tiiming could be a factor. There is also a possibility that the piston oiler nozzle fell off the block and that piston was not being cooled properly. Look next to the crank on the side of the engine block and see if all 6 oiler nozzles are there and facing up toward the pistons. Good luck on rebuilding it. John T

could an injector have stuck open and overfueled that hole? I also don't know what could have caused that problem.

Yes, I have also the oiler tube in my mind and have not yet checked this, if the line is clogged....I don`t know how important is that oil line, but I think may be very important, M-engine design is nice, but the heat is a factor so they installed wet oiling sleeves.....Otherwise the piston was very hop at the top only and if the oiler was the problem it must be complete worn.All oiler nozzes sitting in right direction....How sensitive/damageable are the multifuels if the timing is not set properly?

If you had a timing problem, the other cyls would also have issues. This has to do with your low power problem you started out with. Was the engine missing when it was running? Were all the pushrods on the rockers when you took the engine apart? If the engine were overfueled, it would have been belching black smoke really bad.

Sorry about your headache. Wilkommen to the site by the way, looks like you have a nice collection of MVs as well as muscle cars!

PS, I have a serviceable piston and rod if you need it.

Fuel was new, full tank before I start, good diesel and a little amount of new hydraulik oil, no problem.Yes that is right, rebuilding wasn`t done done very good sometimes, 3 of the rocker arm gallery bolts where lose and the other not very tight....Don`t know, think was the normal rebuilt in the 80s...

the knock was heavy and comes from the blockated piston at TDC the broken pieces blockated the piston the top, so the rod bent a little bit and engine stayed in this position so wasn`t possible to turn with starter, only in the other direction.

could an faulty injector do that damage, if he does not open all the time, nothing will happens, because the piston will be oiled from the oiler nozzle at the bottom.There was no unusual or excessive smoke

I'm just it throwing out there, but if it sat for a about ten years without being run it may have had more surface rust in that cylinder than the rest. The humidity where I live is very high and has a bad effect on any engine that sits. Mine looks to have been rebuilt about 15 yrs ago, and While trying to get road worthy over the last couple years, I try to just crank it up and let it run for a few minutes and get up to operating temp at idle and run it up a little a couple of times. I'm thinking if it shut off with that cylinder on the downstroke it could have had more of the surface rust in that cylinder than the others. I think some surface rust in a cylinder can be broken in again if its not too bad and it is actually run with no load for short periods and then shut down, multiple times before putting a load on it for that long of trip. I hope my luck is better than yours and sorry for your loss.

Will check this tomorrow, but it seems that the vlavetrain will be okay, valves move up and down and push rods are straight.Low miles on engine, you can see also the hone textures at the sleeves.Crank and rod journals are shining like chrome

Eveofdestruction, I have serviceable pistons (3) and a rod, but no liners. You will find they always come together when purchased new. I will get the weight of the parts tomorrow and PM you with a quote from DHL.
