PTO is a power take off. A gear box that bolts to and is driven off the transmission or in some cases, the transfer case. They are used to drive winches, hydraulic pumps, fuel and water pumps on tankers etc.
Power Take Off. It is how power is transmitted via a shaft to a winch or a hydraulic pump for a lift off of the transmision or transfercase. Farm tractors have them above the hitch for driving augers, saw mills and anything else to connect to, very dangerious. To answer the latter thread, $200 to $500 depending on condition and if you have a salvage yard within a 100 mi that you like to drive to in my experience.
