well alot of things happened to me tonite. got my deuce buried in a hidden spring. and the other deuce has a flat front tire. I have a spare to put on but dad warns me that truck of that vintage might have a left hand thread somewhere. So does my deuce take any special procedures to change the tire?

Thanks!!!!

http://www.steelsoldiers.com/deuce/33351-lug-nut-question-2.html

on second page of thread they mention all left hand except the front right...

Quoted from that thread:
This is slightly off topic, but I have to ask, why did they put left hand threads on all the lug nuts except the front right wheel? I was changing tires on one of the fire department's deuces, and it struck me as goofy, or are these deuces goofy, they are both the same, so I am assuming that all deuces are that way. And why would they use left hand threads to begin with?

Dad is correct! Left side- left hand thread, right side- right hand thread. To remove right hand thread turn the nuts ccw. Ther are a few trucks where they were changed out incorrectly. Sometimes the studs and inner wheel nuts are marked.

I dont want to sound like an old fart, BUT..... When you get a duece, the first order of business should be removing the wheels, pulling the brake drums and checking the condition of the brakes, If the brake shoes are good, then you should adjust the brakes as per the TM with a feeler guage through the port in the brake drum!! This is for all new deuce owners, You shouldn't be driving these trucks unless you know you can stop the truck properly in an emergency situation!

Be carefull and look for an "R" or "L" some are marked. Mine went through a depot rebuild and the drums/hubs were reversed on the middle axle

Just an interesting aside, my M37 in Vietnam had right hand threads on both sides of the front and left hand threads on both sides of the rear. It seems that the brake drums on an M37 are interchangable front-to-rear and someone swapped them diagonally.

You'll probably break the tool before stripping a lug nut. (But maybe not... Don't go crazy)

If you clean off the end of the wheel stud or budd nut, there will either be an "R" or an "L" cast/stamped into it. I've never seen one that wasn't marked. Some have been illegible, though.

lefty versus righty

With the threads clean on the wheels studs and you standing next to the truck and looking down at the top of the stud, the threads pointing out to your right shoulder are Left hand threads. While looking down on the top of the wheel stud and the threads point out to your left shoulder, they are right hand (normal) threads.
The lug nuts are also marked L & R or L/H & R/H depending on how old they are. Generally the studs only have room for an L or and R on the end as do the inner lug nuts for the rear axles.

I am glad I ran across this thread. :) I just bent up my tire tool the other day trying to get the left front tire off - never did. Never would have dreamed they were reverse threaded.

Where can you find the TM.S to do all these maint things correctly like brakes ,wheel seals ect.
Thanks Jerry
