Deuce will not maintain Idle

I was heading home from a friends house after we had put our trucks in a parade for Veterans Day when i got off the hiway I pushed in the clutch and the engine died. I was able to get it restarted after pushing on the throttle while I cranked it over. It will start but it will not maintain idle. I thought it might have been a clogged fuel filter, debris in a fuel line clogged injestor.

I pulled the fuel filters out they have mabe 10hrs on them, they still looked new so I put them back. Now I am going to r/r the fuel pump just hope this is the next logical step. If you have any idea of what it might be please help!

the HH or hydraulic head is the part of the injection pump that handles the fuel. read and understand the manual before you replace it. you may have other problems, this is just one possibility. if it gets worse, this is likely, but check fuel pressure at filters and using manual, diagnos problem.

I had a similar issue with mine, if you know how to set the idle and max rpm on your injector pump you'll notice you have a splined shaft with a rocker (which rests against the idle screw and will stop at the max rpm screw) Looks like a pendulum. Sometimes the splined shaft will slip in the pendulum and your idle rpm will drop to 500 or less which might cause the stalling.

Here is a link to my issue, better description, might be what your issue is.

Ok.... so i played with the engine idle adjust screw which didnt fix te problem. Although i was able to turn it high enough to where it isnt dieing on me constantly. The truck acts like its under a load the rpms drop.....then a few seconds later it picks back up into full swing and is reving like a sob. :cookoo: then a few seconds later it drops out and is idleing low. I went ahead and moved the truck last nigh down to where it easy to work on drove 50 the whole way there you cant even tell somethings wrong:cookoo:

I put in some Lucas injector cleaner conditioner in it. Do you think that did it? I am puting new fuel filters in it today. Other than that it gets straigt diesel.

I sure would NOT think that the Lucas would cause your problems.

If you added the Lucas AFTER your idle problem started, then I'd discount that as the cause.

If, on the other hand, you put the Lucas in and then the problem started.... I would wonder if some CRUD broke loose in a line and is clogging someting downstream.

(These are just thoughts - - - - Anyone with "EXPERIENCE" on this??)

Like I said tm's troubleshoting the 465. Just work down the page on it and you will most likley find the problem. That's why it called troubleshooting the 465.

I could tell you just to turn up the main fuel and that would probely solve the hunting it is doing but almost every truck comming in to civi hands should be tuned up. It's easy steps to check everything. Performance is not a one screw thing but all things working together to produce the end game.

I aggree completely, we decided to go from the start of the source and work back, we now think the fuel cleaner degunked the tank and broght debris to the first filter in line. We are going to clean the housings r/r the filters and go from there. I downloaded the trouble shooting matrix and we brought it out to the truck so we can hit it hard afterwards. Thanks for all your help.
If you see a deuce show up on a flat bed tonight outside your house dont be alamed it probally just me ;)

" IF " theres gunk in the tank like mine had do your self a favor . Pull the pump out of tank and the cap and strainer out . You can reach down in there and remove a lot of gunk rather then filters every week and constant irratation .

Mine plugged the filters recently to the point it would hardly run . No idle issue though .

No problem. I have said this before that when we get these trucks change filters (oil and fuel) first thing. There have been many filters installed wrong or with missing parts. Then do a tune up checking fuel pressures and such. Then when all looks right we then turn up the main fuel and they should run better than when Uncle had them.
