Dirty rusty glove box

I pulled the glovebox out of my M35A3 last year hoping to pull the heater core. That didn't happen and is going to be probably a 2-years-later project. It's caked in dirt along the top and has some surface rust. I think I'll wash the dirt off, wirebrush the rust and paint over it. The inside is really nice.

Any ideas why there's dirt and rust on top? Leak in the cowling somewhere under the windshield frame? Anyone else pull their glove box and find something similar?

My guess is if you have those side vents open, dust blows in and circulates throughout the cab. I have lots of dirt and dust in my cab having those open when driving in dusty conditions or on dirt roads.

I sure was glad to see somebody else with that opinion. I didn't want to say it out loud or too loudly. Seemed to me that since there was no chance of knowing that the dust needed to get wiped off - it grew

That might have been Official Military Dirt too!

Yep. Good question where it can from. Most of my dirt got scraped off pulling the box out.

While out I found yet another rabbit hole. Severe corrosion above and outboard on the cab.
Cleaned up, painted and reinstalled the glove box. Winter project is to address the inside of the cab.

The problem I had with my M35A2 glovebox was the rotten and melted rubber gasket for the door. It took me several hours cleaning the remains off before I could replace it.

Mine had that too. I used a wire wheel on an angle grinder, made a mess but came off quickly. One thing I can't understand is how it happened, lol.

There's actually a small chunk of that gasket stuck to my glove box right now which you can see in the pictures. Once I get fed up with it enough maybe I'll replace it with a different rubber gasket that might last longer in the cab environment.
