Diverman needs help getting m923 home

Hey everyone, I bought a M923A1 a few weeks ago at Fort Knox.
Explained how I had a guy that could help me put all the fluids in it and get it running to drive home.
Now I have been told no fluids or repairs could be done on the base. I live in Detroit.
Any suggestions on how to get my new baby home.

I guess Knox is one of those post that have the "Environmania" and requires all fluids to be drained out of a perfectly good vehicles.

If they will not even allow you to put oil, transmission fluid and anti-freeze into it then it will have to be winched or pushed onto a trailer or hooked to a towbar and taken off post.

If there is a SS member locally that will recover it for you to save you from the removal time limit then that would be option one. You could then recover it on your own timeline.

Option two is to find a trucker that is familiar with GL and military bases and will pick it up and deliver it to you. You will prob pay a premium for this and it is well worth it. Sometimes GL will push the vehicle onto a trailer and sometimes you are on your own.

I've never picked up at Knox so I have no info as to how they work.

they tolde\ me that also , i hired a civilian wrecker to tow her th the closest napa store. cost 125.00 then i filled her up with supplies and the fluids i needed topped them off and drove her home , i put on my camo utilities a brown t shirt and proper hat and weny home 980 miles.
if you look kike a duck quack like a duck you must be a duck , ps dont stop at the hiway scales even the cops on the road smiled and waved ,this is a true story

Last time I was at Knox they let us drive the truck off of base, that was back when Marcus ran the place... the guy was never on time and sometimes didn't show up at all... Maybe no fluids and tow it off is better than show up 7 times with nobody there to let you in... reschedule again.

Knox is right in town, there are gas stations and walmarts everywhere. I would just have it towed to the nearest walmart, it probably has fluids in it and just needs to be topped off.

Change the fluids out as soon as you get it home though. Knox is a staging area for FMS and these trucks usually hang around for 18 mo-2 years before handed over to GL....

Don't look at any other trucks on the lot... Many of them are FMS and if you touch them you quickly get escorted off of base. Learned that the hard way after I started one up...oooppps

Salverone: Who did you hire and was it for a 5 ton? That is really cheap if it was a 5t, the hookup fee would usually be higher then that.

My first choice would be to get a member to help me get it to a parking lot. I was told there is a walmart close. I talked to a wrecker and they wanted $750. to take it about an hour away. I can bring all the fluids with me, its just getting it to where I can do some work on it.

For 750. I would call a lowboy service and have it trucked, would not be much more than that.

I can't think of many members who are real close to there..

Awesome advice. One that will surely distroy this hobby when some newbie follows it, and broadsides a school bus when the brakes fail halfway home.
No insurance, no tags, impersonating Military personnel. Our hobby and the supply of surplus trucks will vaporize overnight. If you are going to drive it home, you better do a full several hour PMCS and check everything you possibly can check, and you sure as heck better have insurance!

For the OP, I would have it towed as the safest bet. That is always the safest route, tow or haul. If you have to drive, do as others have suggested, get it towed off base at least (the gov will charge $120 an hour for labor and $98 for a sheet of plywood to repair a building on base after you hit it with the truck, ask me how I know) to a Walmart, and PMCS it there. Plenty of 'supplies' handy if you find something that needs attention.

On top of what FERRO said, I would not brag about this, the WRONG person reads this (yes the site IS WATCHED) and we could get ALL our trucks stopped, some states don't require plates, stuff like this HURTS everybody

I posted this because I was told I could get some good advise on how to get it back the best way. The guy I have to help me get it running is a certified diesel mech. I am sure he is qualified, (without bragging).

One thing to keep in mind about the towing or tow bar. IF it is drained there may not be any oil in the differentials and the driveshafts would have to be removed to keep the dry transmission from turning.
