If they aren't critical to operation, why are they there?

Same reason as the grade 8 fine thread hardware holding on body parts.

They do a decent job of keeping H2O off out of the fittings. When H20 gets in, lines rust! Mine are shot but I keep the deuce clean and dry.

Mine appear to be in worse shape than those. I guessing they were on there to prevent saltwater and such from getting down on the fittings and rusting them up.

I have 2 trucks that came from GL that have the some of the boots removed and the area filled with RTV.
