That is where having great friends here and at rallys help(thanks neilhendrix). I have found people here to be real helpful and have heard of members who came out to help someone who was on the side of the road a long way from home. This (Steel Soldiers) is a great place to build relationships and get/offer help to each other. Chances are that is something that is unfamiliar, as many of us depend on ourselves, but it's always good to have backup....or be backup for someone else. My 2 cents:-D

MAYBE if you get the RV plus.
Will depend on the local driver/company though.
Unless you have help from a fellow SS like you :-D I still can't thank you and your wife enough for saving my bacon. And of course Aaron for the donor parts. I have all his new gear together, and getting ready to commence the repair mission. I will start a thread with all the new shinny goodies, and the step by step. By the way Ed, I picked up my 818 today, and these machines are nice to drive. Yours gave me the bug to get one, so I can blame you! :-D

An AAA auto plan won't tow it.

Suggestion: Buy a tow bar and offer to help other SS members in your travel area. When you need help you will have no trouble getting it.

I have a tow bar and an understanding with my friends that live around here that we help each other. Also, with that tow bar, any larger dump truck or log truck could tow you.

I belong to BMW Motorcycles owners association and when you sine up they ask what kind of help you could offer a fellow rider and how far you would go and if you have a trailer. Then once a year you get a book of all the members who offer help and general location with a phone number. This way when I out one a trip and need help I can just look for the closet person in the book and call for help. We should do something like this.

Actually, I AM a AAA tow truck driver...
I only have one tow truck that could lift the front of a deuce and tow it. Most companies don't have that though.
I was just happy that Aaron had the parts, and I had the tools to get it done, fast and safely.
818s are fun!
Now get some BIG tires on it!

Reality, either SS members, or a medium duty commercial towing company (read, not cheap), will be your main points of help in case of breakdown.

Other like minded people are the best bet for sure. We have the same type of program in our 4X4 club. Everyone has all the other members cell phone info and if there is a problem they start calling. Usually there is somebody from the club with them already though. That is where being in a club helps you out. Since I have the big equipment I usually get the recovery calls but that is fine by me. If I ever want a beer it usually shows up in my hand before I ask. Now that I have a deuce I have to think about how I get myself home if I have a problem. I guess I need to get more deuces. Yeah, that's it. That way I can have a buddie get the other truck when I have a problem. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.:-D

A lot I imagine. The thing to think about is how often do you go much over 50 miles? I have all my peeps from the 4X4 club and can push the panic button day or nite. We range from 50 - 400 miles from home on 4X4 outings. I don't know where all the SS members are in that range. You might be better off being a member of or starting a club in your area. That covers you locally where you will be most of the time. Then if you go for an extended trip you can post up on SS with a route and schedule and see who might be aviliable if you have problems.

i tried to call AAA to see if the RV package would work, but after sitting on hold for 30 minutes i gave up. most tow truck companies have medium duty wreckers ( lease ones ive seen pulling 15k+ box vans) that i wouldnt think would have an issue to move a deuce. i bet those with 109's with RV set ups wouldnt have an issue, but everyone else may be SOL.

you could always buy a second truck and a tow bar and make it your personal tow truck, one more reason to get an 816.

I have 2 mission ready deuces and 3 medium towbars. If one dies and I can't fix it, I get somebody to come get me and either bring the other deuce or take me back to my house and I will go back myself and pick it up.

i have AAA RV, and i've used it. come back from the Hampton Roads Rally last year the steering seized up in the middle of a turn. they had a f650 out there and she towed me 70 miles back to the house. i asked the guy what the tow might have cost, he said probably between $400-500. the $130 a year was well worth it and so is the piece of mind every time i take her out.
