DOD changes ID requirement for base access (Enforcing RealID)

Fort Bragg visitors from some states will no longer be allowed to use only their driver's license to enter the post.Officials have said the nation's largest military installation has begun enforcement of the REAL ID Act, a 10-year-old law meant to help lawmakers detect fake identification following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Fewer than half of all states currently comply with the law, but most others, including North Carolina and Virginia, have received an extension to comply by Oct. 10.

Residents of states without an extension - including Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico and Washington - will no longer be able to use their state-issued identification "effective immediately," said Fort Bragg spokeswoman Christina Douglas.

Those visitors will need to use some other form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, or be escorted at all times on the installation.

Fort Bragg officials said the process for gaining access to post is unchanged for the vast majority of visitors.

"If you have a DOD-issued ID card, you can use it at the gates as you always have," said spokesman Tom McCollum.

The REAL ID Act was born out of recommendations from the 9/11 Commission report in 2004.

That report noted that preventing terrorists from obtaining state-issued identification documents was critical to national security.

The law does not create a national identification card or database of driver's license information, but instead sets national standards for states to use to help prevent the use of fake IDs, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The law serves as a mandate on federal agencies, and participation by states is voluntary, although federal agencies are prohibited from accepting identification from noncompliant states for many official purposes.

Each state continues to issue its unique license, maintain its records, and control who gets access to those records and under what circumstances, officials said.

It does not, however, affect other uses of identification, such as voting, registering to vote or applying for or receiving federal benefits.

Enforcement of the law began in 2013 and enforcement at Fort Bragg comes days after other military posts, including Fort Drum in New York, began enforcement of the law.

New York, like North Carolina, currently has an extension to keep them compliant with the law.

Officials in North Carolina were not immediately available to discuss what steps the state still must make to meet the REAL ID requirements.

As of Wednesday morning, Douglas said, only one person attempting to get a visitor's pass had been turned away.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the law restricts access to federal property, nuclear power plants and commercial air travel.

Earlier this week, officials from the Department of Homeland Security announced that enforcement for commercial air travel would not begin until 2018.

Until then, the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, will continue to accept state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards from all states.

So when I went to Julian's creek a couple weeks ago I had to have a drivers license and my SS card. Will this change? I don't have a passport. ....

I don't think JUST a SS card will work. Some other sort of ID, you need to check Julian Creeks access control via their Provost Marshalls or similar office.

This also made news last week when TSA said they wouldn't accept non-compliant state issued IDs for entering an airport either...

No, a SS card is not a REAL ID compliant identification by itself, you'll need to bring more stuff - or get a passport (for which you will need to bring more stuff).

Most of the REAL ID Act is about getting the people documented correctly, making sure the information is not a duplicate of another issuance, and then displaying very specific information on the ID.

This is a new NATION-WIDE ID REQUIREMENT that kicked in as of 1/1/2016. Certain State's refused to make their issued DL's compliant, thereby making them FEDERALLY INVALID for ID PURPOSES.

I suggest you contact your STATE OFFICIALS - State Senators & Representatives - and get THEM to fix THEIR dereliction problem. There is a tie for peaceful protest and there is a consequence as well. Unfortunately, THE PEOPLE will now suffer the penalty enacted by the FEDS.

If you have a valid military ID (active duty, retired, reserve or national guard) you will have no problem. If not you will have to be vetted and (depending on the security level) you will either have to get a pass or be escorted while on base.

A sad commentary on our times.

Based on whatvi saw today, its not a good day to be a contracted employee on a govt base today. They probably spent more than a few hours getting in the gate if they didn't have the right creds.

Holy Smokes! Real citizens can't get on Post/Base,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but others get education and drivers license?!?!? WTH? Anyone see something wrong here? Illinois can't even get a "budget" or pay contractors, let alone follow a Federal mandate! How embarrassing!

We have issues here at Ft. Benning as well. We support (as do other towers) the Military Police towing vehicles for them as well as GSA and private individuals on the base as well as towing vehicles on to the base.

What a hassle!! We have been working for over a year to get a "vendor's ID" where the driver/company is vetted and issued a picture ID to be allowed on post.
So far that hasn't happened and it looks like it may not any time soon.

On top of all that...the requirements seem to change daily depending what supervisor is on duty controlling access at the gates!

We have had to raise our rates due to the extra time it takes to get thru the gates...usually 20-30 minutes.

What a cluster farkel!!:papabear:

Does anyone know if a CDL from these states will still work to get on bases?
Or in Washington, will the "enhanced" driver's license work?

When they were talking about enforcing REAL ID for airplane travel as well, the news articles said that if you had the enhanced Washington driver's license you would be able to use it for air travel, but the current news stories don't mention either CDL or the WA enhanced licenses.

Honestly man, the best thing to do is contact the Provost Marshall/Installation Access office for wherever you are going and ask them specifically. Make sure you get their name/title/position so if you show up and get told no you can at least take someone else down with you! hahaha.

Edit: So I called FBNC Provost Marshall. Basically, if you are a US Citizen, not a veteran (retiree, CAC, [VA ID Card-Maybe]), and not a Tribal member, the ID you need is a Passport or a Passport Card.

Officially, it's based off the same list as the TSA Provides here: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification

I talked with the guy at gov planet at the Julian's Creek location. The only thing he said was differant was that if you hadn't gotten a pass in the last 90 days there was a back ground check you had to go though that took 5 days. I guess I'll find out when I go to pick up my stuff.
