Capacities being equal for weight which way is safer? Inside the aircraft, not dangling below it. Slinging something below changes how you fly.

That penduleum effect on a slung load has caused the load to go up into the blades & brought the chopper down. Think dumping used blades in the ocean to get rid of them during wartime by sling loading them & dropping them..

The aircraft is also much faster and more maneuverable with a vehicle inside, than swinging underneath. Think "exposure to ground fire". That's why the Marines kept the M151 in service long after the Humvee came into the inventory. We could carry a couple of jeeps inside our CH-53's (yes, we called M151's jeeps, small j) quite easily, then blast along right over the trees.

Also, remember that a lot of things like putting a Mule inside a Huey were done purely for fun and for the photo. Remember turning someone's VW or Pinto sideways in a parking spot when you were in high school? (Make that horse/chariot/wagon for some of us older guys, Fiat or equivalent for the younger folk).

Agreed.
Most of the TOW Mules I have seen in 'service' pictures are using the standard wheel setup, haven't found an 'in service' shot of the wide wheel setup yet.
As a new Mule owner, I've been looking a lot recently. :)

We loaded ours out like that couple of times, flew it to the big island that way once, just to show we could. Most of the time I would load it in the back of a deuce an a half and sleep on it on the ride out to where ever our LZ was at.
It was a huge time saver, it hauled everything we needed plus our own butts. Otherwise we would have had to hump a lot of chit!!!

If memory serves me, we could fit [3] MRC109s or MRC110s in a CH53. Those are just communication M151's . And yes we called them jeeps to, early 80's
