I thought the same thing.
Op, you would know if it was a positive ground or isolated ground.
The fact that the - cable goes from the battery to the frame is a dead give away.
99.99% of all military and civilian vehicles are negative ground.

When I picked up my Mep-003a from GL the red cable was connected to the frame and black cable to the starter, which could give anyone good reason to double check.

Ditto - The very first MEP 002A I picked up also had the red cable connected to the chassis and the black cable to the starter. I wonder if somebody did this to be "cute" or what. I hooked the red cable to battery + and black cable to battery -. After rebuilding 8 MEP generators I know better, but on the first one I did not. I was fortunate I did not cause any permanent damage.

I went through the same with a Mep 002. The difference was the cables were reversed at the starter.......that took a little while to figure out....as who does that?

Some mechanics are just full of malice. No other way to explain some of the things I've seen like this.
