Flat towing an M1009 with an M923

What would be the appropriate towbar to use ? Can a 5 ton even tow an M1009(M923 much higher).
I have an event coming up that I would like to flat tow an old M1009 to with my 5 ton.

i have done this before. Just remove the rear drive shaft to be SAFE. Put the trans in neutral the transfer case in neutral and assure the hubs are unlocked. Tow it around the world like that. Make sure it has 4 tires and wheels when doing it or you will just have a tow bar when you get there. Remember (Every which way but Loose) movie when the Grand Ma was towing the VW behind the wrecker?

Medium tow bar would work great. I've got thousands of miles dragging CUCVs of every variety. Since the bar length is adjustable, extend it out a hole or two. The 5 ton won't mind a bit.

I have an event coming up that I would like to flat tow an old M1009 to with my 5 ton.

Any towbar with 1" feet. Medium towbars, medium-heavy, even the heavy towbar as long as you have the 1" feet.

As stated above, pull the driveshaft - it's quick and easy.

Be aware of towing truck to cucv distance. Frequently you can turn sharp enough to make contact, especially turning right. Obviously this to be avoided.

Crossed safety chains under the towbars to catch it if it comes off the pintle.

If you're dropping the rear shaft, you don't have to do the rest.

So OK he don't have to have tires and wheels and he don't have to check if the hubs are unlocked. OK that will be interesting. I think he got the answer he was looking for. I have to ask why someone always has to get the last jab in. My directions were painless and to the point. Why debate a simple 3 minute instruction or advise against it? Just asking. What harm could have come from my answer? Was it to labor intense?

I just made a simple point. Just extra steps that doesn't have to be taken. If the rear shaft is off no need for it to be in neutral. No need for hurt feelings.

No hurt feelings here. Just giving a straight answer. Like I said i always do the extras to ensure that that the wheels keep on turning and nothing else. I had bad L/O stay engaged and heard grinding sounds coming from the front hub. Not good. That is why I mentioned all them things. It is fine. Fair enough? NO extra precautions are not enough of extra precautions.

Talk to ke5eua regarding inadvertent bumping of the transfer case into 4wd while flat towing...and the resultant badness.

I reluctantly find myself in agreement with cucvrus. The extra precautions, although almost certainly unnecessary, may pay off disproportionately to the effort required...

This is not meant to perpetuate a disagreement but to make certain that the original poster gets factual information. If the front hubs are unlocked and the rear driveshaft removed, why would the trans and transfer need to be in neutral? The only reason I can think of would be the fear of someone locking in both hubs. If this is incorrect, please correct me.

A lot of the new guys don't even know what manual lock-outs are for,they think all 4wds are elect.push button.Sometimes it seems like cucvrus is going overkill,but hes just thinking deeper,he should write a book.CUCVs for the New and Impressionable.I hope this came off as a compliment,that was what was intended.

I think I have my answer by digging up an old thread. I'm planning on towing my M1028 behind my M923 this October. I'll be sure to ensure the front hubs are "off" and the transfer will be in neutral. 180 miles each way. Any worries that the M923 rolls around 70 mph and the M1028 only does that on a flat deck while being carried? It only does about 45-50 comfortably under it's own power. It runs fine and can go 70 mph on it's own but it didn't like it the one time I tried it.

I've towed my M1028A2 before with the transfer case in neutral with no problems. I have had a LO hub malfunction before so be sure to check the front drive shaft is not turning when the truck is moving before you hit the road.
