FLU419 road driving legal concerns and challenges?

Hi Guys, My (rough) understanding is there are typically 4 primary classifications folks use for road use with their 419's.

1) No title / register at all. Folks use a triangle (SMV / SIS) for road use.
* How do you handle insurance if an accident occurs, or do you simply accept the risk?

2) Titled / registered as a tractor.
* I'm guessing insurance and registration is mandatory, but should be fairly cheap.

3) Commercial truck title / register.
* Mandatory insurance and registration and (probably) very expensive.
* If titled / registered as commercial would the driver need a CDL? I'm guessing 'no' if it's titled / registered under 26k? That seems to be the weight limit for requiring a CDL.

4) Historic/QQ/Military (forgot this, thanks natrgatr and speedwoble for noting this) .
* Mandatory insurance (very cheap), but in many states excessive restrictions. Some are so tight, the truck is functionally useless for personal driving.

I realize these questions are probably state specific. If so, I'm just trying to get a feel for how you guys handle your road use.

Depending on your state, you can register as a historic/former military vehicle. Cheap in Indiana.

PLPD insurance is pretty cheap here also.

Registered as an Antique in PA and commercial insurance(liability only) is only $400/year.
I have a CDL anyway.
Not a fan of the SMV route. It limits your legal top speed and cars that see the SMV assume they must pass you.

In Georgia the best way is to register it as a commercial vehicle for non-commercial use. Same with the insurance. Very inexpensive.

Thanks for mentioning historic, I forgot about that option. Certainly this is a common sense option, but the restrictions in many states is extreme which is a big deterrent if the risk of being caught is high.

What kind of usage restrictions are there? I agree, I'm trying avoid the SMV route. This tends to degrade a real benefit 419's have.

BTW, Like the name . Thankfully never had a woble on a bike (yet), but have had to deal with and (promptly) fix death wobble a few times with my modfied jeep.

In ND I register my MV trucks all as farm vehicles the insc. is dirt cheap and my only limitation is that I cannot exceed 400 miles away from my property. This works for all trucks 2.5 ton and greater, smaller than that and the state does recognize them as trucks!

I have my M35A3 registered that way as well. I can use the vehicle for any personal use, but no commercial use. Same with my State Farm insurance. The problem is that almost every state has different rules.

To me this makes a lot of sense for folks that have this option. You don't have the excessive restrictions that historic tends to have, but still benefit from cheap insurance. One question: Under 'farm' are you limited to under 25 MPH? Do you need an SMV, etc?

Yeah, the differing state laws are really the recurring elephant in the room. It really causes confusion and challenges for anyone new to MV, like myself.
