Found a 1031 truck, looking to make it into a expedition vehicle, might buy need help

Hey guys,

Looking to buy a M1301.

It has 49K original miles, work top on the back of the bed, air compressor, generator. I had a Jeep, that I wanted to plan to take on a expedition to Alaska and South America. Does anyone have any objections to this truck not being used? I know if I did get it, to maximize MPG, I want a difference transmission and gear ratios.

That is a M1010 or M1031 contact truck, 1009 are blazers. With that said welcome to the sitem1031.jpg Also you at least need your state listed, town would be nice also.

Otherwise,

the truck is a very good price and looks to be in very good shape. If you search here you will find that gear changes do not help much with MPG. Also be advised that there are restrictions on export of this vehicle. Also make sure you have numerous spare alternators, injectors, injection pumps, and cooling system components with you before you leave the country.

Hey guys got it...that is what I need to find out. I was just recently medically retired from getting hurt sometime ago in Afghanistan. I am looking to do a world expedition. Starting up to Alaska. I have a Jeep TJ right now, it is going to cost me 20K to convert it to a 6 or 4BT diesel engine vehicle.

Is this vehicle legal to take outside the country and would you think I should consider it or is it a waste of me time for my application? Thanks!

If you really want a CUCV expedition vehicle I'd suggest an M1010. It's one of the primary reasons I bought mine. I didn't see the ad before it was removed but if the truck you found is a good deal it may be worth buying it to resell and buy something else that'll work better for your needs. Another good way to go would be to get an M1009 (Blazer version) and install a rooftop tent. Although if you plan on really traveling into the boonies you may want to swap the axles out for the D60f/Corp 14B axles from a 1 ton. My m1010 has been able to get me everywhere I've wanted to go and back home again, with plenty of room for all the gear I could ever need.

Consider space in the back. The boxes offer great space for tools but there is no space whatsoever in the back for a person. Are you planning to towing a trailer?

I already have a M416 trailer, that I completely restored and modified out for my personal use. My concern is can I take one of these vehicles out of the country? I plan on going to South America and Africa.

Color seems to be everything when crossing the southern border. For all intents and purposes, it's just a chevy truck. If you camo it you will likely get undue scrutiny. Can't speak intellengently for the other countries. Nothing in the US prevents you from driving your FMV to another country.

You need to learn about the EUC (end use certificate) requirements before you buy. If you can purchase without a EUC then you can export the truck. IF you have to sign an EUC then it cannot be sold outside the country. I do not know if it can leave the country with you and then return.

I have had two 1009's one with euc and one without, getting one without an euc seams to be more difficult these days.

As long as he is driving the truck or even shipping it to himself, the EUC won't matter. As long as it's still his, he should have no issue with federal restrictions on driving to other countries. One of our members sends trucks to himself in Costa Rica through the port I work at with no issues. The country it's destined for may have other ideas.

I would avoid an M1009 for any kind of serious duty just because you really should upgrade to 1 tons for much needed reliability right off the bat. You also are dealing with a weaker frame and shorter wheelbase which doesn't suit a workhorse at all. Unless you are doing some real technical wheeling, any other CUCV would suit you better to start with. I personally will tell you from experience that the top of a darker colored M1031 will suck to lay on after it has been in the sun for any amount of time. I was up on mine laying a little silicone on some of the rivets to keep water from coming in and I had to wear welding gloves to keep from burning. Solar gain sucks in this case.

Not speaking from experience but I think if you are planning to venture into such places like Africa, your best bet would be to run something alittle more native to the region. Land Rover/Range Rover, Land Cruiser, Patrol, etc. are a more worldly platform than a CUCV. Plus those rigs are really built for interchangeability. You will note that those trucks all have the same universal joints used on both driveshafts, swappable front to rear diffs, and full floating front and rears. They are just meant to be 3rd world beaters. The CUCV is a great platform but I don't know if I would want that as my first choice. Don't get me wrong, I love mine. You have to draw the line somewhere. When in Rome...drive a Land Cruiser :)
