Fuel Filter Gaskets

I was bleeding the fuel system today, and when I went to reinstall the secondary and final fuel filters I decided to use the gaskets included in OD Irons Kit ( didn't the first time), but they are a pain in the butt to get on. What is the key/trick or are they the wrong size?

I got mine through Eriks Military Parts and same problem on the secondary and final filter. In fact I just changed mine today and said forget it on replacing the gaskets. I'll just have to check tomorrow to see if they leak, if so then I'll pull them off. I shoved a nail up there on my previous truck trying to hook the gasket to no avail.

The gaskets fit in a groove on the can holder. I find using a small hook tool to remove them works fast. Putting them back simply means working them about until the fit into the groove. The groove is larger than the can neck.

the Napa # 5070 gaskets fit fine for the secondary and final filters. I went thru the same thing this week.
I got some #5070's at NAPA yesterday and they fit perfectly for the secondary. No more leaks for me :D

What is this "final filter" and where is it? Why does no one mention the Primary filter? Yet mentiions one of the secondary filters, not the other secondary filter, but points out the "final filter".....which I've never heard of let alone know where it's at.

Educate me.
If you look at the top of the secondary fuel filter assembly it has "Primary" and "Final" written on the top. In other words one is a "Primary-Secondary Filter" and the other one is a "Final-Secondary Filter". People should just refer to them as secondary filter 1 and secondary filter 2 as it seems to confuse people a lot.

Hope that helps.

For some reason none of the after market filters sold have gaskets that will easily install.
I was having good luck ordering Mil-spec filters from Ted's Trucks in Dothan, AL, but the last ones I got from him were the same way.
My solution was to remove the dual filter housing and take it to an industrial gasket supplier and get some large O-rings that fit snugly into the groove. When the filter is tighened it compresses the O-ring and makes a tight seal.
Since I drive my trucks a lot my long term solution for me will be to install spin-ons for all three filters.

Spin on secondary filters would make this thread obsolete, quickly! I hope it is not too 'long term' before we get some.

I too have ordered the 5070 gaskets and they installed in the groves perfectly. Lucky for me both old gaskets came out on the cans. A dental pick works well for removing old ones. They are sharp and catch the gasket but are not so tough that you can torque on it and damaged the seat.

As far as primary, secondary and final go, it does get confusing so I suggest we just name them Larry, Darrel and Darrel

For those of you who are confused by the names of the filters on the multifuel, according to the manual they are the primary(which is not my concern with my original question), secondary and final(the 2 side by side on the drivers side of the truck).

To the others thanks for your help I guess I will have to remove them and get my mirror and check for a grove. I did not feel a groove but what I thought was a lip.

Kind of figure that it looks like this: ]

The gasket fits inside the lip. Once you do it, a gasket will last for several changes.

I still think the better solution is the spin on filters. Just wish they were being made, NOW!

My Baldwin filter sets come with the correct secondary and final fuel filters included. If anyone is interested, PM me because I just got in a couple more cases of them yesterday.

I appreciate the interest in my secondary fuel filter adaptors, when I get them all set, I sure hope someone buys them. This is a pretty expensive proposition. I am hurrying as fast as I can on the secondary fuel filter adaptors. I will announce as soon as I can send them out. I have been running them on one of my trucks since May '08. They work perfect.
Now, on the names for the fuel filters, The first filter in a M35A1 or M35A2 system is the primary fuel filter/water separator. Since 1962 M35A1s have had that primary on the right front inner frame rail about under the generator. On ALL of my M35A2s, the primary filter is still in the same place about under the generator or alternator, depending on which one you have. If it isn't there, it may have been relocated by some previous owner/ inventor.
The double fuel filter housing on the left rear side of the Multifuel engine, is called a SECONDARY on the front half and a FINAL on the rear half. They do use identical filter elements, but the designers called one a secondary and the other a final. No matter what, these engines have a very effective filtering system. JT out

If I have to come to NY to get those filters, you are going to be one sorry dude! If I have to change those stock filter cans with all that rust one more time, I am going Postal.

Rebelpride Yes they are the wrong gaskets and I have spoken to Mike and he is working on it. Try and reuse the old for now and see if they hold and put in the new next time.
