The fuel gauge on my CUCV recently stopped working for no apparent reason. The needle is stuck on just above empty regardless of the amount of fuel in the tank. any suggestions on what I might try before dropping the tank and ripping my dash apart?

Try the ground wire. Mine did the same thing. It might be broken and or dirty/crusty/rusty. You should be able to get to it without removing the tank.

There is a section of the Tech Manual that cover testing the fuel gauge.

Once you read the manual as suggested above. You will find that past F is normally what happens when there is no ground or a break in the wire going to the back. E is normally no power to the gauge itself or a grounded sender wire. Many threads have been made about this.
