Gen 2 troubles

Hi. I'm sure this has come up before but I've searched and between here and my TMs I haven't found an answer. My Gen 2 light stays on at idle and goes out at speed. My batteries are new, belts are new, I've cleaned the grounds including the Gen 2 bulb socket, which actually made it worse. I've checked voltages and running the front battery has 14.15, rear battery is at 13.00, and across both it's between 12.86 and 14.76? Why don't I have 24 across the batteries? Gen 2 alternator measures 27.45 but is it not sending it out? Is the alternator going? At idle or just above the light is either on or flashing at me. When the light is on the voltmeter drops but it's still in the green. Any help would be appreciated as electrical issues aren't my strength. Thanks.

I cleaned the grounds as far as the alternator, batteries, etc. I'm suspecting that Gen 2 alternator is worn and is on the way out. It looks original to the truck. Thanks for the replies.

The alternator is very easy to rebuild. If you decide you need to rebuild your alternator, I have the kits for sale. If you buy another alternator, make sure you keep your old one. They are not available anymore and you may need it for parts (rear casting).

There is a link to my classified ad and alternator rebuild thread in my signature.
