Generator / Alternator Problems

I need some help and suggestions. The guage on my dash that indicates generator output on my 71 AM General Deuce stoped working. I thought it had a loose wire but now my batteries went dead yesterday. So I am assuming someting is wrong with the generator. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can trouble shoot it at home and what usually goes wrong with the generator and any experiences you have had fixing them or paying to get them fixed.

Thanks

Get the truck started by charging your batts with a charger or jump.

Take a volt meter and check the output on your alt/gen from the terminals on the rear of the generator. Should read about 27-28 volts. If it is reading that, then it is putting out the correct voltage and the problem lies elsewhere. If its not putting out that, then it is a problem with the generator.

Mine had same issue. When I checked the output is was not putting out any voltage, just read 24 volts running which was reading the fully charged batteries. I tried adjusting the voltage screw under the contact cover on the generator and that did not work. Exciter wire was also fine. Turned out the generator was bad, probably the brushes.

I picked up a new modern single wire 24 volt generator from an SS member on here and it works great. No more issues, charges fine.
