As long as you disconnect the power to the glow plugs or heater it will be fine. While still not advised, can be done if done in a smart manner.

Well looks like I'm on to a 12 volt system now! Looks like somebody before us had already started down that road anyways so we are just going to finish it.
This way down the road I can get a regular altinator when on the road traviling. Also do not want to have specialty items if I can help it that would give me issues on getting changed.

I didn't take any pictures because quite frankly I was between pissed and worried through this whole process! Had to check truck into the Transmission shop this morning with possible tranny issues again! Trans not shifting right hopefully its a vacuum issue but may be something caused when electrical went to crap.
Here is what I ended up with so far after my battery blow up and wiring issues.
The Problem: Found out that my blinker relay has a DI-OD in the back of it between the fuse panel and Firewall! This seems to be the culprit of what I think actual caused my battery to over heat or blow. How I found this is after removing instrument panel we would turn on truck and after a a few minutes we noticed small amount of smoke coming from fuse panel area.
The Fix: After cutting wires and plugging relays for flashers and blinkers directly in to wires by passing the fuse panel! All seems to be working again except for horn it seems to be permanently Fubar-ed at lest for now.
ALTERNATORS: We removed both Alternators had them rebuilt and only put passenger side on going to a 12volt system. After following the instructions found at http://www.roscommonequipmentcenter.com/nn10.pdf by the Roscommon Equipment Center Northeast Forest Fire Supervisors. While doing this we noticed that someone before us had already started the process but never finished so we only had to move one wire and cut one wire and we were good! Also replaced the 24volt altimeter in dash with new 12volt meter.
STARTER: We also installed 3 batteries in parallel so we had good cranking power but this did not help the 24volt starter to turn over well so I purchased a new 12volt Hi Tuque starter. Now motor turns over easily no hesitation! I may have 1 New 24volt and one needs to be rebuilt starter up for sale soon!
Total Fix Time & Parts Cost: 1- New Optimum Battery $233.00 2- Rebuilt 100amp Alternators $80.00 1- New Hi Torque Starter $180.00 1- New 12volt meter $19.99 2- New Flashers $30.00 6- New marker and blinker bulbs $10.00 2- New Battery Leads $20.00 4- New Battery Ends $10.00 ///// 15 Plus Labor Hours by my self and my Dad. Total Parts Cost $583 ruffly All because of a .50 cent DI-OD. Labor Time Not Included!
Hopefully all will stay working now so I can finish interior work. I still have to replace all gaskets on Driver door, Replace door locks, Put in Upgrade Headlights and marker lights as well as the Upgrade light harness for these lights. Lastly at this time is putting in the rear heat shield and mat. Then I may finally get to go get the windows tented!
