My local police department just got 2 of them. The local paper said that they will drive one and use one for parts. They also said that the gov't has about 30,000 of them that are available to police departments and other government agencies. I'm thinking that Monkeyboyarmyville should get a couple.
I am pretty sure that any HMMWVs that goes to a local municipality cannot be resold to the general public at auction when they are done with them. They would have to turn them back over to the DRMO to be destroyed or given to another government entity.
A cruse up Gruber Road reveals that they still have quite a few A2s and even some A3s in several of the motorpools. Most are parked on the very back rows.
Wouldn't surprise me. You look close enough, there's a tan CUCV in one of 'em. At least when I was there anyways. We really never had anything quite THAT old down in the 3rd BDE motorpool. I would go into specifics, but with OPSEC and all... As far as finding a milspec HMMWV, the Army never gives those things up. They'll sooner take 'em out and have PFC Snuffy shoot AT-4's at them than they will sell them. Best bet seems to be the Marines and local government offices (sheriff's office, emergency management services, etc) that manage to get ahold of them and auction them off.
