GL recomended freight haulers

Anyone have any experience with GL recomended transproters... They seem a bit on the expensive side... but I dont have any prior experience. I want to move a 5 ton 923 /925 from Ft Know to Buffalo NY... $450 to haul off base and $3.10 per mile ???

That seems like a lot for a pickup......It should not be that hard to access Fort Knox....it has mostly been deactivated.

Why does it have to be hauled off base......it should be loaded right at the GL site.

I would look for a local truck broker who is looking for a back haul to your area.

If you fax the driver a copy of your Paid Invoice and a Pickup Authorization he can get the truck.

The issue is how hard will it be to get it on the trailer (it will have to be a step-deck).

Some GL sites will assist to the point of slaveing off a truck and or pushing it up on a trailer with a fork lift.....others will offer little or no assistance.

A lot will depend on the driver that goes to get it....if he has experience loading MV's that will be an asset...if he don't give a hoot he may make an attempt to load it and then leave the site if it don't go easy.

I ended up using Fastrack Logistics to pick up a generator. It was probably 30% more than the raw freight would have been, but it was picked up quickly and arrived ok.

I think it's because that's what the listings for Ft Knox say now, hauled or towed off base. Gone are the days of driving them off.

It's almost close enough to me to buy one and have it hauled to my place and not cost a small fortune.

i have seen them haul deuces out of fort knox gl site on a flat bed trailer. not sure how they loaded them. they will give alot of assistance or have when i have been there. as far as pricing that does seem a little high. best bet would be a back haul type job. you could also try u-ship.

You should be able to get it hauled for $3.10 a mile (or less) without the removal fee.

Trucking quotes can vary widely. Finding a trucker looking for a back haul will be your cheapest. I'd put it on u-ship and see what happens.

Ft. Knox has a ramp in the GL yard that matches a step deck's height. Drivew or push your vehicle right on. Dayton also has a ramp. Many places yopu have to be prepared to load off the ground. Ask site manager what he has at his location.

I used a ship "bidding" website called "U Ship" for delivery on a deuce I just purchased.

You put in the info one what you want to have transported, as well as the pick up and delivery locations, and various trucking vendors will "bid" on it.

In the end, I got a company that did it for a good bit below $2.00 a mile.

The pick up and delivery locations play a LARGE role in the price. If you're in a good location (large metro area), where the company can easily do a turn and ship something back on their return, it can be way cheaper. If you live in the middle of BFE and they're only going to make money on your deliver (and nothing on the return trip), it seems to be a good bit more expensive.
