Going to look at a Deuce tomorrow

I'm planning on going to take a look at a Deuce tomorrow; thought I would post some pics of it up here and get your guys' opinion on what it is worth, things to look out for, etc.
It is a 1971 model; the owner claims it has a little over 16k original miles and runs/drives perfect, no leaks, etc. The only thing he could tell me about it is that is has the multifuel diesel in it...he doesn't know which model (I wouldn't know by sight, either). He's asking $3k for it, and it is only a little over an hour away from my shop. He claims to have the gov't paperwork necessary to get a title/registration.
So...what do you think? Good deal? Average deal?

The owner is a noob at best..
Well, that makes 2 of us...but before I went to take a look at it I figured I would do some due diligence and ask the pros

The appealing thing was the close proximity to my shop. Saving $1500 doesn't mean much if I have to take a 1000 mile roundtrip to get it.

But, if the consensus is that I should pass on it, I'll take the advice and keep looking...

The title is the big issue.
I have never purchased a vehicle from a government entity (just some tractors and a diesel generator).

When one buys a vehicle that needs to be titled from a site like GL, I would assume that no title comes with the vehicle...there must be a standard gov't form that goes with the vehicle that the DMV accepts for title/reg paperwork. Anybody have experience with this in Oregon?

Short answer is to ask the DMV if they will accept a SF-97 (govt title) and a bill of sale and maybe a notarized letter of transfer from the seller to you for application of an Oregon motor vehicle title. Otherwise its title agencies or better yet some searching, using the search function at the top of the page, to find othe OR owners experiences that may help you plead your case with DMV.

If you do get it you'll need mud flaps for the rear tires to drive it home.

Also don't take this as don't buy it, take it as don't pay $3K for it.

There will be more rtuck and if you rush it's called an impulse buy.
For the 1st one it should be an educated decission.

Also welcome to the site/sigkness/site!

Definately not worth $3k without a bed. In WA state, the SF97 with a Bill of Sale is good to go to get something titled
Oh and welcome aboard!! Great to see anothe PNW'er

You definately have some knowledge now to bargain with. If the guy doesn't want to listen, consider passing. I have passed on several because I am waiting for just the right deal to come along. One will, I just have to be patient.

That's pretty high priced for a truck with no title or bed. Keep searching and im sure you will find something closer than you think. Good luck and welcome to S S [thumbzup]

I'm not an expert

Personally, I wouldn't pay 3k for that rig. Title or not. You don't have mud flaps or rear lights. Looks like it was partially parted for other rigs and now they are trying to get rid of the rest.

My vote is to keep looking or only offer 1k (providing you get a title), you'll spend the remainder getting it trucked home until it's road legal.

sewer- a lot of folks have picked up nice trucks from Idaho Motor Pool. May or may not be close to you. They are on the web with current pics and prices. You may pay a little more than from an individual, but it may save you some big headaches, or you can just use the information for comparison.

Any idea what it was used for that it doesn't have a bed anymore?

I also agree that 3grand is way overpriced. Several dozen went in OR 2 summers ago from GL auctions. I imagine there are quite a few around the area.

The owner has the bed...he has plywood sides on it and it is full of firewood.
He is asking an additional $500 for it...

I have a pretty well outfitted shop and I don't mind wrenching on a project...
But, it sounds like everybody agrees that 3k is too much for a somewhat incomplete rig.

I think I'll make a low offer contingent on a title, and see where it goes.

I am going to go against some of what others have stated---

First-- where else are you going to buy a deuce for $3000? I think it is a decent deal if it runs good, especially if you can get him to throw in the bed and lights.

Second-- MUST have a tilte is total BS! I have sold over 50 trucks with ONLY sf97 and bill of sale with ZERO problems. I wish some of you guys would quit spreading mis-information. If you dont want to buy a truck without a title-- fine- dont buy it. But dont mislead other members here. I would make sure it has the sf97, though.

Carry on...

Ive seen several in the classifieds starting at $2500 (with beds, pintle, and both taillights)

Edit: Sorry 100dollarman, I re-read the entire thread. No Title should raise questions, but should not be a deal breaker. I see where your coming from (your post, in this thread)

I live in Oregon and recently purchased a M35 with only a bill of sale, and gov SF-97 form. Took it to DMV and it was extremely easy to get the title put in my name.

About that truck you listed... $3K is high for it. There is a fellow member that is selling his in Oregon, check out his craigslist ad here:

100dollarman, we dont know what paperwork the owner has right now. No one said you cant title with just the sf97. (atleast in this tread)

I understand about the SF97, but what I took from a few posts is--- Dont buy without a title-- which is what I am disagreeing with.

I said it would be a decent deal if it runs good, and especially if it had the parts- I have not seen a $2500 deuce on this side of the country for awhile-- not saying it is impossible, just that $3000 is not bad. Find me a $2500 duece on this coast.
