Good Trade?

I am looking for some honest opinions and not open a can of worms. I realize this is like comparing a watermelon to a raisin but I value the input. I own a very clean 70 Kaiser bobbed duece. my daily driver. I local MV collector/restorer ask me if I would be interesting in trading for a 998 humvee, 6.5, 4 speed. solid rails, a driver. I have not had enough experience with the humvee to know about the mechanical issues. I understand there are many unanswered questions about the over all condition of the 998. I am just looking for a comparison of maintenance/mechanical concerns to be a daily driver. I do really like my duece but...

I like both raisins and watermelons.

You can always bob another deuce. You cannot make a Humvee from another vehicle.

I say trade if your interested in trying the Humvee.

If you miss the bobber, you can build another and have both(if you really like the Humvee).

Like DH said, Deuces are a dime a dozen, where 998 are not. You can always bob another one if you really miss it.

The 998 will probably be worth more to a broader range of buyers if you ever have to sell in a hurry. If that is a concern. Just make sure you have a title for the 998.

I have neither a deuce or a Hummvee but I know that hummvee's are worth three times what a deuce is worth. I would go for it and if you don't like it then sell it for enough to just buy a bobbed deuce. Make SURE, Absolutely, Positively that it has a good, transferable title.

Is it a straight trade?? Don't know the condition of your Deuce but the 998's have always seemed like more $$ and less common. I've never worked on one but the 998 looks like it would be a total headache to work on. Also what do you use your deuce for? You can't do all the same things with both.

Hey, thanks to all of you that responded. I hear what you are saying. My bobbed duece was a piece of cake to register and insure here in NV. What about the humvee, I have heard they can be a challenge to make them legal for a
daily driver even with a clean title.

I guess on the surface it seems like a no brainer but I do not know enough about the mechanical issues of a humvee for a daily driver. I drive my bobbed duece every day and it has never had any major problems. I do not need a mechanical nightmare.

That is a very good point. However, like all the other vehicles. The DOD spent millions of dollars making step by step manuals for just about every aspect of driving and maintaning the truck. Get them and have at it.

I keep coming back to this. A non running 998 add with a 5 digit price tag will not raise eyebrows while a non running Duece will be hard to sell with a 4 digit asking price.

Again it is your truck so if it doesn't feel right, walk away.

I don't know or would imply anything about the 998 owner who you say is "local MV collector/restorer" but would wonder why he would trade a $20k+ vehicle for your deuce. He could build a deuce for less then he could replace the 998. Whats wrong w/ the 998? If nothing and he has a clean title jump on it, run it for a while and if it turns out to be a headache sell it. You can build a nice deuce for the money 998's bring. Unless you have one of the C&C crew cab high dollar deuces I would think $ for $ you can't go wrong and would be ahead. You can always build another deuce and w/ the knowledge from the previous build it will be that much better.

The big issue I have with the HUMVEE (and I drove them in the Army) is the automatic transmission.

You lose the ability to push start it if you lose juice in the batteries.

If a deuce has fuel and air and you pull it a short distance (Hi Range, 3rd gear) it will fire and run. It will get you home even without lights. When you lose power on a HUMVEE you have a speed bump unless you have someone to slave it off or an extra set of batteries.

You cannot flat tow a HUMVEE any distance without dropping driveshafts. I have towed deuces 60-70 miles at highway speeds just by putting the transfer and transmission in neutral.

You also lose the multi-fuel capability which is a big plus since we all know fuel prices are not going down. The HUMVEE is not going to get much better milage than a bobbed deuce especially with a load on it.

If you are running scrounged fuel that is costing you a lot less than straight diesel it the milage difference equals out quick.

Since you say the bobber is your daily driver which one would you want to get T-boned in by a big SUV....the aluminum HUMVEE or the steel deuce?

There are trade offs in every deal.

If this guy is offering an even trade I would examine the vehicle and his motives very closely....not to say he is trying to pull a fast one but you never know.

Just my jaded opinion for what it is worth.

Like many others have mentioned, I'd do the trade if the 998 is in good shape. Deuces are plentiful.

Says this makes it easier register as a special construction? I think this is getting in way over my head. I have no experience with this and do not need any headaches. Just want to drive. Feel free to voice a opinion.
