got the deuce registered.......

was down at DMV for a few hours yesterday registering the deuce. First step, VIN inspection that was easy as pie and they could have cared less what I was driving, whether it was safe, what it even was, as long as that VIN matched. BTW, there should be one stamped on the frame in the front driver side fenderwell, the inspector refused to use my dash plate <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_shrug.gif" alt="Shrug">

went inside, waited, and got helped by a nice lady who had no clue what was going on. I explained I had a Kaiser Jeep M35 cargo truck, manufactured for the military. Unfortunately my title only said "Jeep" (never mind that it said 6x6). Well, that really confused them, and they wanted to hear none of what I had to say. They pretended I was trying to pull one over on them by telling them it was a military cargo truck, and that they were Sherlock Holmes and they looked up in their little book what the MSRP and GVW of a Jeep flatbed truck was and now I have a 1966 Jeep Flatbed, GVW of 5999. <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_rotfl.gif" alt="ROTFL"> I won't complain, I wasn't about to start arguing and tell them to come out in the parking lot and see that it wasn't a "Jeep flatbed", then they would have really freaked out and called Operation Tips or something. It saved me quite a bit on registration fees, that makes up for the fact that I had a $106 credit devalue $70 on me in 20 days, I was so mad. Oh well. If I ever get hassled I'll just explain what happens when you ASS-U-ME <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_reyes.gif" alt="Reyes">

MM!

I found out that you need to give them as little information as possible! <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_nono.gif" alt="No-no">

When I applied for my title, they didn't question anything! I have it registered as a "stake body" truck!

Never mention "Jeep" when referring a Kaiser truck! It confuses the government idiots! <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_approve.gif" alt="Approve">

I live in PA and when I bought my 72Duece it had an Antique license plate. I was able to transfer the tag into my name for $75. With this tag my duece doesn't need inspected or registered ever(as long as I own it)! The tag limits my use to once a week or less than 2500miles a year. That works out fine for me as I put less than 2000miles a year on my other toys. A big bonus $$$ for me not to have this beast registered or inspected again!<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_big.gif" alt="Big Smile">

Same thing happened to me. Yeah, and don't say anything. They think you are lying when you talk, so I let them figure it out. Two troopers pulled me over one night and laughed about it.

Guys;
I got lucky when plating my Deuce. The county just north of here has a huge hot rod club. Not only that but the president of the club is a federal judge! Every one of the ladies are compassionate about unique vehicles. The rule is, if you want a plate they get to look at the vehicle. I got a 26,000lb plate without restrictions for $300. In '05 it'll be about $150 because of the paperwork they needed to file for my first year doubled the cost. No one has ever hassled me over my truck. I'm truly blessed with really cool DMV people here.

Hey this reminds me, i still need to register my duce. I live in California <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_thumbs_dwn.gif" alt="Thumb Down"> so what should i tell them when i go to register it? Appearantly i need a Class B licence to drive anything with dual rear axles over 6000lbs. Any chance i might be able to find a loophole? I got the notorized "Dealer Re-Assignment" paper in the mail from Geovernment Liquidation, is this all i need?

Not only will you need the dealer reassignment, you will need the SF97 standard form for obtaining a title. You have this right?

My deuce is plated as a REC TRUCK<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_approve.gif" alt="Approve"> Since I'm in the DMV at least once a month (way to many vehicles) I know all the ladies and they love to help me out<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_big.gif" alt="Big Smile"> The deuce was originally plated as GVWP plates and were over $300<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_thumbs_dwn.gif" alt="Thumb Down"> We discussed other options and came up with RV plates, and they have no restrictions and are a lot cheaper<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_smokin.gif" alt="Smokin'"> It mostly depends on who you get and what kind of mood they are in<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_wink.gif" alt="Wink"> If it dos'nt seem to be going very good I just leave and come back another day<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_thumzup.gif" alt="Thumb Up">

Antique plates on ours, that's a real easy way to go if your state has that option, registration is cheap, good for a lifetime, you're emissions/inspection exempt and insurance is cheap

Downside, they cap your usage, to like 1 day a week, but they never come to check the odometer or anything like that, so as long as you don't make a habit of being seen everywhere with it, you'll be fine

FL only recognizes GVW truck tags for the deuce tractor. I declared a weight of 14999# and it costs me $133 a year. I wished FL had other options. At least I have no restrictions on driving this way, I drive it almost every day.

I also have antique plates on my trucks. For less than 20$ a year for the plates and 45$ insurane I can drive limited miles. The other option was a cormersial lisense which outcomes the prise of the Deuce for just a year.

California.... ouch. Doesn't CHP need to inspect every vehicle, no matter what? In NV you only need inspections on out of state VIN numbers, nothing else just the VIN, and inspections on salvage vehicles.
My advice, never mention anything inside DMV about the 3 axles or GVW, in NV it doesn't matter about 3 axles as long as the GVW is lower than 26k, but in CA I know it matters.

You will need to get that sent. It's an official document and is made out by DRMO. I would say try it without but don't be to surprised if you need it.

In CA, any peace officer can verify your VIN. Register it with Historic Vehicle plates and you don't need to get the weight verified. You DO need a class B license, no way around that one.

you can probably get around the GVW in CA, but isn't it that CA requires a CDL for all 3 axle vehicles? DMV will probably let that slip but if CHP pulls you over won't you be in trouble? I tried contacting CHP in case I need to drive through there but couldn't get a hold of anybody.

you do need a class B licence for 3 axles in CA if the truck weighs over 6000 lbs. Maybe if you register it as historical vehicle and they think its under 6k lbs? sounds risky though.

i went to the DMV the other day and they want around $600 bucks to register my duce! This seems like way too much. Anybody know of a way to bring the price down? I dont really want to go with the historical vehicle plates because i want to use the truck for commercial purposes.
