group 31 battery box and center console

my battery box was rusted through so i decided to patch it up because i did not like the plastic box i just got. I re-skined the bottom and added uni strut on the bottom to make my clamps. Pictures explain everything. Then mounted a ammo can for my center console.

Pics are back. I'm impressed, the repair turned out great and nobody will ever know. I think I will fish out the rusted bottom batt box I just threw in the scrap pile and fix it the same way.

It looks a million times better with it painted. I was having a hard time with the seam sealer. It was coming out hard so it made a mess. No big deal its not a show queen. I flipped the box upside down cut out the bottom but left a lip for the new steal to sit on. Then welded it in. I believe it is 1" unistrut the i demoed from work. And those are just strut-nuts with a welded coupling synced together so the bolts have more to grab and do not bottom out on the track. So the nuts still slide so it is adjustable. I only have a few hours into the whole job. I had all of the steal kicking around.

That's a good looking, cheap fix. When I finally got around to fixing mine I just made a new one(the advantages of working in a sheet metal shop). Made it out of some scrap pieces we had laying around. I still need to do something about hold downs, though. You might want to drill a few holes in the bottom for drainage, too. I didn't at first and checked on it today after a weekend of rain, and it had as much rain in it as we got.

yep drilled a 3/8 hole in each corner.

I thought about it, but that's about as far as I got. Moreover, even though the material was cheap/free, it was fairly labor intensive. I am sure that would go down as I built more boxes. However, if there is enough of a demand I might consider it.

Also i messed up a little and the batteries hit the wing nut. So i took the latches off the plastic box and mounted them to the metal one. Here are the finished product. - paint

Really nice looking fix. I haven't removed my battery box yet, any trick in doing so? Any release mechanism to know about? Thanks!
