Continental Western has a website . I use them they are cheap . If the restrictions are too much you use your truck differently than I do . I tow trucks here and there once in a while or just drive it around or to shows . I don't exceed 2,500 miles a year so it's worth it to me . It's a 52 year old truck that's 20,000 lbs and only gets 5 mpg , I'm not going to use it much anyway . Besides I can't beat $54 a year !!! Mark

I was denied a policy by JC Taylor because my primary vehicle was more than 10 years old. Thie insurance stuff can be a headache.

Yepper, I had the same reply. I was asked what exactly I did with my "show truck" when not on parade. I explained just light duty around the farm. Sawmill products hauler for fence repairs, hay hauler to the bottom 20, pulling fallen trees out of the pines with the newly installed winch! Running to town to the drive through StarBuckians for a latte.
Needless to say she returned my E-mail and said those uses were not exactly the type of "use" they will insure. "Simple military restorations that sit around waiting for a parade" is what she stated they are in business to insure. I said this truck is on parade every day of it's life........She didn't return my call.

Looks like I'm staying with Progressive. Maybe I'll try USAA again and see if they have a representitive that can understand exactly what this truck is....go figure!

Don't bother with USAA, been there, done that.....I had my truck insured with them and they called me back sometime later and said upon further review they don't do anything over 10,000 lbs.

For as many of us as there are it seems like we should be able to "ALL" get a "Use it as a part time pick up/Use it as a parade truck" policy!"

I think alot of it has to do with the state you live in....I couldn't get Haggerty, etc. here in New Mexico...they don't service policies here....

I got to thinking about things after my posting for Progressive and got curious when so many were saying they had Progressive. In 10 years in the claims dept I never saw a single MV claim. I suspect that those who purchased it got it through an agent that misrepresented the vehicle or didn't understand what they were trying to insure. Progressive would never insure anything with a GVW of 10k or more under a personal auto policy when I was with them. Since a deuce is around 13k it wouldn't qualify. I'd hate to see one of the guys wind up in an accident and then get told they weren't covered because their vehicle didn't meet the definition of "an insured auto." Belive me, if your vehicle doesn't conform to the policy they WILL NOT cover an accident. The thing they will tell you is that you should have read the policy (like anyone ever does) and you would have seen your vehicle didn't qualify for it whether an agent sold it to you or not. An insurance policy is a binding contract on both parties but the contract is the kicker. If you sign a contract that says your vehicle is "x" and then it isn't, the other party isn't bound to it.

My suggestions is to skip Progressive and try someone else. Make sure you tell them EXACTLY what you have to avoid any misunderstandings in the future. For everyone else I suggest you dig your policy out of the filing cabinet and read what the definition of "your insured auto" says. There will be a whole page of definitions at the front of the policy jacket.

I can't tell anyone about the sales end but I know we denied a bunch of claims for things like Uhaul trucks because they were over 10k. The smaller ones were okay but not the big household size ones. I also recommend not believing anything an agent tells you. The only best interest they're thinking of is the one that has to do with their commission.

I asked the agent directly and was told because it was over 10k it was a insured on a non-commercial/commercial policy...whatever that is. I cannot use the truck for financial gain, but it is covered for personal use. Going to re-read my policy tonight....

I use State Farm for my bobbed Deuce, Its titled as a pickup under 12,000 (which the weight is) $125 full coverage/comprehensive with an agreed value of $10,000.
I tried to insure a tandem dump with them, the local agent wrote the policy, which was canceled by State Farm Corporate, once they figured it out, but to be fair I was using it for construction work, they caught me ha ha

I would suggest to go to an independent insurance agent, lay it on the line, show the vehicle, talk about converge and usage. My independent agent covered my dump for about 900 a year for construction commercial use full converge for a 1977 International and that was 2 years ago.

There are other lesser know companies that independent agents should have knowledge
Just my past experience that worked

And mkcoen is very right, with anything nowadays--work-insurance-and many other things
if your outside of written policy, you are legally on your own

I have Progressive Direct.
Was just told anything over 1ton capacity or with more than 4 wheels
would have to go through their commercial division.
The commercial division told me that a former military vehicle could not be insured direct yet could be done by Progressive through an independant agent.
my "little" MV's are insured through Hagerty, my new deuce may not be nice enough to go through Haggerty though.
Have to do something soon so I can get it registered.

Thank you for the info Ranchhopper. I have run in to the lack of communication with Gulfway too. Like you said though, they have what we want so I guess they can get away with it.

I use Gulfway. The policy is a Commercial policy from Travelers with the Collectors Choice that was already mentioned.
I read my policy when I got it, but reading this has caused me to go back and read it again... I find differences from what's stated here. But, I'm in Vermont, and thus far I believe I am the first from this state.
Here's what I see, and one thing alarms me hasn't been mentioned here yet.
No set mileage restriction, but they did ask how many miles, and I'm sure they'll be more likely to hold me to that than my "regular" insurance company.
No coverage for a trailer. (no voiding of truck insurance for having a trailer, but I'd better hit them with the front bumper, and not back the trailer into them...) That's not what I thought I had, but since I don't have a trailer for this truck... A bridge to cross later.
No restrictions on what I can carry.
Lots of stuff about depreciation, which I read to be lack of authenticity from replacing parts with "non-number matched" parts? They buy used parts however, which is what my truck constists of.
They don't buy "parts vehicles" even if said parts vehicle can be had for less than the needed part. But they'll buy the parts, and of course once a value is determined they write a check which is mine to do with as I see fit.
They do cover "replacement vehicles", so long as my deuce is broken, I can beg, borrow or steal somebody elses for whatever I needed mine for and be covered for up to thirty days. That covers a purchased replacement too...
And there's a section that I'm gonna re-read about non-covered (read-mechanical) failures that I really don't like. No coverage for such events? To my non-legaleeze certified way of thinking, it looks like it says a failure (blown brake line, tire blow out) is not covered, so accidents resulting from such are not covered. I don't see how they can exclude that, but I'm gonna have to read that again. I'm tired, maybe I'm misinterperiting something, because that just doesn't sound right. If that's the case, that's going to warrant some serious rethinking of the situation.


I have been under-covered in the past by misinformed people selling me insurance direct from the company. (snow plow attached means liability null and void- for nearly two years!) Regardless of the outcome, you know the saying, fool me once... Well, this time it's shame on me for not knowing. I'm glad that this post came up.

Depreciation means that they will pay for what is left of the life of an item. An example would be if one of your batteries was damaged in an accident and it was a 5 year battery. If your battery was 4 years old they would take the total value and deduct 80% ($100 battery would get you $20). Different states determine depreciation in different ways. For you guys in WA state they are not allowed to take depreciation unless it adds to the "overall value" of your vehicle such as repainting the entire thing. So if they try and hit you up for the battery example don't let them get away with it.

What that actually means is that blowing a piston through the block isn't covered. If your brakes go out and you wreck or hit someone else then everything EXCEPT the mechanical failure (the brakes) is covered. This is generally put in there so people don't think they can get a new engine when they forget to put oil in it and it locks up (it happens more than you would think).

All this being said, I am not an attorney (nor do I wish to be one) and each state has it's own Insurance Commision that makes up their own little rules to make things harder to decipher. These comments are just general information to try and help people understand generic policy language. If you have a specific question regarding your company or state your best bet is to contact someone there. I recommend contacting the claims dept versus an agent. Agents are trained to sell you something and in general do not have a clue as to what is going to happen if you have a claim.

Try Nationwide Mutual out of Canton, OH. They insure my deuce and Unimog, know what they are, and the only limitation is no commercial hauling. In Texas they are both rated as pickup trucks, and for each of them individually I pay less then for my wife's 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited or for the old Ford F250 4X4 PU I used to own.

N.B. One's a 5 ton pickup (on the road), the others a 1-1/2 Ton, no mileage or use restrictions, $12,000 declared value on the duece, $14,000 on the Unimog- everyday drivers.

I had a issue with Gulf way trying to get insurance for my Mack B model didnt work, and if they did it would be over 300 bucks a year... I Have the Deuce on JC Taylor insurance it costs about 60 bucks a year, no milage limit, they only told me i couldnt take passengers in the cargo area, I put the Mack on JC taylor as well, no problems that was a little more to insure 150 a year, but still alot less than Gulf way and no headache of milage checks
