Hard to start M1009

I have a 1984 M1009 6.2 that is hard to start. I recently purchased the vehicle. It was hard to start and I put in new glow plugs and fix the problem. It would then start up instantly. After driving it a week it now has problems starting again. It will crank over with no smoke, and after many attempts it will finally start and blow alot of smoke. Also after the new glow plugs the light would go off within second but I do not hear a click anymore? Before it would stay on for up to 10 seconds and then I would hear a click. After it starts it runs fine but it is hard to start and getting worse. Any ideas? Please help and thanks! Luke

Search is your friend (your question has been asked and answered many times).

If you have the stock 24V glow plug system and there are problems with glow plug connections or controller you can burn out new glow plugs in less than a week.

You could have a fuel delivery problem, leaks are common with the stock filter base.

Download the manuals and read them. There is a great step-step troubleshooting section in the -24 manual.

Thank you for you response. Yes I have previously down loaded the manuals you listed and I have many more. I have invested a lot of time and effort in research and repairing this problem. I am not lazy or stupid looking for a quick response to fix the problem. My times particular makes and models of vehicle have specific issues that occur with similar repair proceedures. Hundres of pages of tech maunuals do not tell you this. One of my best friend has been a dealership service writer and manger for over 25 years and has told me most repairs are constant and routine for specific problems not always in service bulletins. That the beauty of this site, to help and share with others. Any help would be appreciated.
All rubber fuel lines have been replaced and clamped well, I think. The glow plugs are AC60G and receive 12 volt according the the ml and 10.7 actual. PLEASE HELP AND THANKS! Luke

Check temp. switch on the back of block next to fire wall drivers side.

Temp switch is good and thanks! GOT IT FIXED and runs great. Had a bad glow plug relays from Auto Zone, the second relays works.

Problem! I left the lights on and killed the batterys. Charged them up runs good but now the lights don't work and with it off the batterys drain. Huh? oh boy. I checked the service light switch and good.

What would cause the heater, engine control, accessory, wiper, and 28v 10 amp fuse not to work? No power at any of these fuses and they are not blown. The batteries will drain now if I leave it connected. Checked all fuseable links I could find and all fuses are good. Cannot find a short that draining the batterys and don't know what caused it.

Let me ask a stupid question I could not find an answer to. The glow plug relay has two large post, does it matter what post I put the positive on? The other one has the glow plug harness connected and it is only to have power while the plugs get power and then shut off? coorect? Then the two small post one is ground and the other provides power when the key is on. Does it matter if the post are reversed? I do not have a purple wire going to it like all the post say. I have a green wire to the top or right post and a pink to the left or bottom postl the pink is a ground. Does it matter how a relay is wired I cannot find a diagram, Any help would be great and thanks! Like

No problem on the GP relay. The connections can be to either pole. They aren't polarity dependent. Put a meter on one large post (12v tap) and make sure you have 12V. Then move the meter to the other post (glow plug side) and turn on the ignition switch, you should get 12V.

Check key switch, make sure it cutting power when in off position. Starter relay under dash above diagnostic port in cab. Stay strong you'll get it. This site will get you there, search is your friend. The relay has an update look in FAQ.

have you done a resister bypass which should help with the glowplug issue and a doghead mod to the starter circuit?

Hey thanks. Yes the input side to one of the large post actually receives 24 from the resistor ( I call it at power converter / from the 24 volt side it converts it to 12 volts but only under load). and then the output I call it, the other large post is then 12 volts also that goes to the glow plug harness, but only until the relay clicks off. But my question does the two small post matter what side goes to what? One is ground.

I don't believe I have a glow plug issue. The glow plugs get 12 vlots and perform great. Starts right away. Every works fine now but the running lights, parking, turn signals, back up, and heater.

Does anybody know of a shop in the southern calif area, Rancho Cusamonga/San bernardino area that can work on m1009 24/12 systems. Everything works but lights. Ithink its a dead short and the batterys drain when hooked up.

On my m1009 I have a section of the fuse box which has clearly been overheated as the plastic has melted in the upper right hand section. I can't remember at the moment if its a 5 amp fus
e but I can tell you that due to the damage in that location, the fuse will get a little loose and the same circuits will stop working. I have a new fuse box to put in here one day but for now i'm just being careful with it.
