Does anyone have a source for a rear drive shaft for a 1985 CUCV. My U-Joint went on Saturday and the connection at the shaft is mangled.

All the local parts places cannot find one.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Tom When I bought my M1008 I had the typical fork lift dent . Itook it to a heavy truck driveshaft PTO shop to have it retubed. They can build a new shaft from the Spicer catalog should only take a few days . Also I did not have the new shaft balanced. A one piece is usualy not a problem.Gary:grin:

thanks all.

I just found one local for $65.00. It is for a m1009. If there is a problem with it I will be back in touch!!

Thanks as always for the help.

Well, not out of the woods yet. Turns out that along with the drive shaft and U-Joint, I have a cracked rear gear carrier. Would anyone have one????

I am told it is the part that the gear sits in and the ring clamps to????

It seems that it caused oil to leak to the wheel, locking the wheel on braking, causing the shaft to twist and break... Ahh the joys of green iron.

If anyone could help it would be great. The dealership has it, but it sure is not cheap!!

Thanks

Tom

It might be cheaper just to pick up a whole rear at the junk yard. That way you dont have to re set up your ring and pinion when you change the carrier out.

Also, Saturn Surplus sells new assembly's. Johnfire here on the board bought one and swapped it out. You could PM him for more info.

4XHEAVEN in Gloversville NY has used carriers and new stuff too. Vince is who you want to talk too. I just ordered a spider gear kit from him for my 86 K2500 and he had it on the shelf.

Does anyone have a rear carrier that they are willing to part with? The only one I can find if for an axle that is not limited slip (civilian) I have a lm1009 I am told it is the part that the ring gear is bolted to. Mine is cracked in several places.

Thanks for any help.

:!:I have some experience with the type of rear end issue you are having...
http://www.steelsoldiers.com/cucv/32376-need-m1009-rear-end.html
The leak in the wheel is a bad seal/wheel bearing which allows the axle to turn off center thrashing the gears in the differential. Part by part, calibration tools and fluid are about the same as a whole new rear end. If you have a mechanic do the internal gear work the labor costs could be high. Also the brake drums can pretty much get ruined with damages such as this so the rear end complete gives you everything you need, just add fluid.

I had a complete rear end shipped from PA to NW OH for about $150...

Total project was under 8 hours and less than $600.

Hope this helps
