I came upon this thread late, I would suggest the use of a few bags of burnt lime to stiffen the mud.
Stuff works like magic.
Old farmer showed this to me years ago, it really works well.

Will it harden like cement? What about washing it off aferwards?

Does not set like cement.
Washes with water and some elbow grease.
One pound of lime will suck up around a half gallon of water,swells up quite a bit, will generate some heat also.
Interesting chemistry here.
