hemtt antifreeze

What antifreeze did the military run? Did they add SCA's? Mine is green and I'm ordering test strips to try and find out what is in there. Since they ran 15-40wt engine oil in the engine and transmission, I worry that the coolant may not be DD spec. Have any of you HEMTT owners changed your coolant? What do you run? Any flushing tips you could share? My gauge always runs at the 2 where it says 240 on the gauge. That would read hot to me but my infrared thermometer says 180.

Mine had the classic green stuff in it. I didn't test it, but I replaced it when I got home from my recovery trip and put in green Prestone and SCAs. Personally, after some of the trouble I've heard about extended life coolants eating gaskets in older engines, I plan to stick with the old style green stuff.

I didn't fret much with flushing, because I knew my radiator needed to come out... It used to leak but mysteriously stopped. I bought a new radiator so I'm going to replace it anyway, and add a coolant filter, block heater for winter, and air conditioning for summer, replace belts and hoses and rebuild the fan clutch. Lots of work coming once the weather cools off! When I refill after the project is done, I'll try to find green coolant with official DD approval.

My temp gauge is worthless as well...

mine ha a leak and needs to come out as well. I would like to try and find one.

I read the same thing about the extended life coolants that they will cause leaks in our engines. I also read that fleetcharge is a reasonably priced coolant, but pencool 3000 or powercool 3000 is what dd approves but that is crazy expensive stuff. I need to test mine.

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure I trust the current official DD coolant approval... Is it some modern extended life stuff for the Series 60? That's one reason I hadn't done any real research yet, I was going to read up or post on the "Detroit Diesel Engines - Two Strokers" Yahoo Group, where there is considerable knowledge. But I'd bet they'll say 'good old green ethylene glycol coolant plus SCAs'...

Until I see something that convinces me to change I'm going with regular antifreeze + SCA. I think it's important to check with test strips. They are pretty cheap and make it easy to keep the additive at the correct level.

I think the radiator cores are the same on the HEMTT, PLS, and MK48 even though they have different NSN and part numbers. I have a couple MK48 radiator cores that I've taken measurements on & they match the overall dimensions on the core of a PLS radiator I have. The bolt patterns of the tanks look the same, but I haven't compared them close enough to say it is an exact match. If someone has mapped out the dimensions & bolt pattern on a HEMTT core, I'll do the same on the MK48 core to see if they are interchangeable.
