HMMWV accessories/mods?

I purchased a HMMWV and am in the final stages of getting it to me. It is a basic M998 with troop seats in the back. I am planning on keeping it in this configuration and adding a 4 man soft top later.

Does anyone have any must have accessories or mods that they recommend?

My suggestion is to pick an era/theatre and do the mods that are appropriate for that time, rather than throw the kitchen sink at it. Mine is super early, so I am keeping it that way, rather than adding hundreds of upgrades that came after 1985. Sure is tempting to put those 24 bolt combat rims on it though, rather than 8 bolts and 36" RTs.

I don't care about vintage, I'm all about usefulness. Light bar, sun visors, led dash bulbs, upgraded seats, better headlights. I'm also thinking about buying some 1/2" rubber mats and lining the back to protect the bed.

I did a seat upgrade, LED headlights, upgraded steering wheel, 12 bolt rims (24 are too much of a pain to break down) added sunvisor kit, upgraded turn signal. If you add the longer speedo cable and rerouting it with a wider sweeping bend in the engine compartment area that will help it last a lot longer. I have added other upgrades but those are the those that ya get the most bang for your buck in my opinion.

Other nice add one for later would be a full rear bumper and tire carrier of your choice. There are two types out there. A good heavy duty brush guard also is nice but not totally necessary.

How bad was it to upgrade the steering wheel? I've been thinking about it because my stock wheel is kinda chewed up but I don't think its worth cutting or welding the steering column if I would have too.

We used a steering wheel pulled for a 5 ton. It was almost too big but we made it work. Chipped off a little paint. If you can find a correct steering wheel pulled/installer it should be a piece of cake

Any standard 2 claw puller will work...it will either come right off, or tear up the plastic. But no biggie cuz your putting on a new wheel.

After the mechanical and paint fixes I think I will go with the following:

1st Hard doors
2nd LED lights all around
3rd Lightbar (looking at Ibis Tek)
4th Radio of some sort. Looking at using a tablet and setting it up with a back up camera. (won't look original, but similar to a Blue Force Tracker).
5th Upgrade rear bumper and add tire carrier
6th Rear seat upgrades (front is already done)

I am all for keeping it original. With that said I added an airlift bumper for protection in San Antonio! Also, brush guard and new seat belts. As I have said before many of the original auction HMMWVs have been modified. It is your truck!

After mechanical reliability: Lights, sun visor, weather proofing (better doors, better seals, better roof, etc...) Rear view camera... Radio (as in music)... lol.

If I had to list the best mods to do to your truck here's what I'd recommend:

1) Dual pull rear brake upgrade
2) Heavy airlift rear bumper
3) High back seats
4) Radial tires / 12 bolt wheels
5) S3 protective control box

These things add comfort and reliability to your vehicle.

Yes the upgraded parking brake is a good one. Forgot that as I sorta take it for granted now. DatguyC: true you can still easily start it but I always lock the steering wheel and I have never had an issue with it. Perhaps it's a respect thing with these trucks that ppl don't mess with them.
