Searching through all my previous stuff led me to this. Here is an example of a spare part I wanted. It was toast so I refurbished it: AC regulator.

And here is the refurbished AC regulator (left) compared to the one that's in the genset (right).

I was able to rebuild the rectifier, find an equivalent controller and all I need to do now is install the choke transformer. I can change the whole unit in about 15 minutes and be back up and running.

I purchased the spare for about $15 on ePay. The diodes were the most expensive part of the refurbish.

For parts use the -35P. Sometimes you get lucky and find it, sometimes you have to dig in and find an equivalent replacement.

The distributor is not correct for the FS162 however is correct for the F162. The F162 was used on everything from pumps to welders to... The FS162 has the "hole in the head" for a distributor so who knows what you have. See previous warning about the military standard engine. The mag is obviously used to start the genset with a dead battery. I tried it and it actually works pretty good.

As far as a bendix, your search for parts begins! If you buy the genset, let me know and I'll try and post the pages for the starter. It's a shunt starter so be aware of that.

I can't find any stater information at the moment.

And I was able to finally collect the correct shielded mag ignition wires. Note the Slick mag is a female, not male making it very weird. There's a guy in Chicago that ?was? selling NOS mags for $75 which is more than a good deal. You can search for him on google.

Thats the strange part of the distributor location. Its not mounted on the top of the engine. The distributor is on the side where the magneto should be mounted. Its like it has some right angle drive adapter for it. I am beginning to think walk away.... Walk quickly away. If I am going to rework something, I want it to be as much original as possible.

the genset I have been looking at has more questions than answers at this point for me.
I am probably going to pass on it unless I can find favorable info about my questions.

The guy is really trying to get rid of it quick.
I hope that i am not breaking any site rules here, If so I apologize.

This is the least I can do for the guy to help get rid of it.

If more of my questions get answered, I may still buy it. But I am waiting for those answers.
You would have to pick it up yourself, I am fairly sure of that.

Ex Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific (SWFPAC), formerly Naval Submarine Base Bangor (now Naval Base Kitsap), now engineering professor in South Dakota. I live very high tech by day so I really enjoy the low tech by evening. You can *see* and *feel* the old electrical stuff. To accentuate this, I cut and bale my pasture with a 1950 John Deere A, a mid 40s JD rake and a early 50s 14T baler.

That's some beautiful work there ! I also really like the way you rebuilt the AC regulator ! You should do that for some side work.

I've tried to answer very general questions as best as possible. Please ask specifics and I'll be glad to try and answer with specifics. A question like "how hard are parts to find" is like anything, "it depends". Not trying to be smartrear but a lot of folks on this list are supercharged resourceful. I feel my abilities pale in comparison. I would think owning any genset, especially an EP, would require some level of resourcefulness in finding parts and making repairs. There's a guy in PA that has one of these and he makes me look like a kindergartner in my abilities. So I suppose it's relative.

Please. Ask away.

I wanted to report back on this generator. It's 61 years old now with two resets. One in the late 60s (USACOE) and one by me documented in this thread. We recently had a derecho and tornadoes move through last week. It annihilated the power grid - it's unbelievable until you see it. And the reason I rebuilt this genny. It's first real test! I've attached photos of it in action and how it's PROPERLY connected (double pole, double throw switch on the pole) with seperate generator ground. That's a four conductor cord you see. Note the roof damage in the background.

That being said, the genny performed flawlessly. It handled any load we used - hot water heater, geothermal heat pump which draws 100+ amps for about a second when it starts up, microwave, etc.) but we did not use the oven, dryer, air compressor, welder, etc.

I thought it started to vibrate and I became very concerned. I have a lot of experience with vibration loads and those will unzip most things in a hurry. However, it turned out to be a couple of loose bolts on the trailer, problem solved. The amp gauge on the AC side took a dump so I had to use my Fluke to see how balanced the loads were across the load leads. We did shut it off at night as we didn't think we needed it.

I ran it for three days and then power came back on late on that third day. You can tell when the smart meter comes back alive. This genny is a gas hog and I knew that going into this. It burned about 3/4 of gallon per hour on moderate load. The Continental only stumbled kicking on the heat pump. I have the setup for sucking on a 55 gallon drum and I have 300 gallons of bulk gas about 20 feet from the genny. I only had to refill the fuel cell once with the can you see.

(As a side note, I started building a wifi generator monitor that will report several values to me on my phone. We'll see if it works and if it does, I will report back.)

I'm happy as hell. Three cheers for analog.

Update:

I'm a bad dog and get no biscuit. I hadn't started this genny since the derecho, see post above, in May of 2022! That's no good. That being said, I primed the engine (you can see it in the control panel in the video below) and it lit off after no more than two turns of the engine. Fuel stabilizer (high quality) really works. More to the testament of this EP genny. Simplicity. All worked as it should, even the automatic shutters. There is a small exhaust leak in a muffler gasket, so that's only a one beer fix.

We're just (2) miles from the War Department ("Pentagon"), so just some tooth enamel and all the rest only a fine gray ash will be left here.
