How do I know if my M927 was rebuilt

I bought my M927 truck described as "missing information plate".

I picked it up and want to know a bit more. How do I know, maybe by inspecting certain components or telltale parts, if the truck was "rebuilt" or just not used too much? Any idea?

On the motor of my M931A1 (pass side) if a rebuild plate. Same on the trans. There should tags on the drivers door.

Tags in the door are mostly MWO tags, they are not indicative of a "rebuild".

I know the a2s that are not rebuilt usually have a silver warranty tag with a blue edge on them. Rebuilt is a loose term in the military they just go thru it for major problems and repaint. Often they miss major problems.

SUPRMAN, not all of the rebuilt trucks have those tags. I believe that the RRAD rebuilds are the only ones with those tags, although the Kansas Joint Readiness Center (I believe that is what it was called) has rebuilt a lot of trucks and I think they usually have a dataplate by the driver's door. I also know that some trucks were rebuilt in Maine and I am not sure how they are denoted. Finally (to my knowledge), other trucks were rebuilt (not sure where) that had NO rebuilt markings. I have an M927A1 that is such a case. The motor has a rebuild tag on it...the gauges and switches are new (the truck is tan with all new green gauges and switches). I suspect this is the case for his M927. You could ask CARNAC to see if he has any way to know this info.

Can you take another photo more to the right of these gauges? Thats a super clean dash and looks like new guages. How many miles and hours?

1,353 miles on the odometer. I have never had a medium or semi truck this clean looking with this little rust.

Agreed, do some of your own inspection about the truck, look around for the rebuild tags on parts of the truck. My M923 has a few MWO tags on them, no rebuild plate but still has a new motor as of 2000, and a few other things that have been gone through.

That is a rebuilt truck for sure! Now, exactly what a "rebuild" entails is up for debate. I have had trucks with new motors, rebuilt motors, original motors that were repainted...and the same for t-cases and transmissions. Most have new wiring, some have new gauges (although many of the RRAD rebuilds have some original gauges...I have a rebuilt M934 with an original tach, for example). Most had new insulation under the hood and in the cab. The sheet metal varies by truck. One will have a new hood, or new doors, or even a new cab. Others reuse parts that are deemed usable. I have a RRAD rebuilt M923A2 that has a hood that was beaten straight with a hammer! No joke! They cut corners where they could. I also have a RRAD rebuilt M928A2 that has a bed that was straightened...and a RRAD rebuilt M923 that had fenders that had "work" done to them. I, personally, am not sold on the rebuilt trucks. No slamming your M927 or anyone's trucks. I am only saying that I would just as easily buy an original truck as a rebuilt truck depending upon the price. I like the rebuilt trucks because they have SOME nice new parts on them. Your mileage will vary!

In the early 80's men at AM General got paid good money and good benefits to build thousands of the M939 series trucks. I personally think they did a great job, and no other company since could possibly do as good of a job "re-building" the original truck.

It is scary what they consider rebuilt. The RRAD trucks have a sticker on the driver's door that says something like "WE REBUILD THE TRUCKS LIKE OUR LIVES DEPEND ON IT BECAUSE THEIRS DO." Not sure that is true is all I'm saying. I have yet to find a rebuilt truck without flaws. While that was the common assumption when buying surplus military trucks, I kind of had a different expectation when I was purchasing rebuilt trucks...with that type of sticker on the door...that had anywhere from a few dozen to a few hundred miles on them since the rebuild. WOW! Can you imagine that some poor schlump GI sets off in Afghanistan only to find that the fan clutch gave out or something else went wrong. Pretty poor IMHO. I actually got a truck where the starter was not properly grounded to the motor and that shorted out the alternator and led to a situation where the starter wanted to ground itself to the nearest ground wire! Yup...it found the nearest wire that was not really capable of handling those kinds of amps. It literally smoked the wiring harness in that spot.

Yes, but not all Americans and were you referring to US citizens or Canadians or Mexicans or Chileans or etc etc etc? They are all Americans.

The rebuild process appears to be more quantity over quality. The truck I just got back from DE has around 3k after rebuild it had a few rust spots here and there and it took about half an hour to power wash all the dirt off it but it runs like a champ no air leaks everything works perfectly but the fuel gage.

One of the MV trucks I own a M923A2 was re painted at a private body shop contracter. The work was shameful at best. I contacted a logistics officer I know at a US base in Italy and he confirmed the US Army must use them for they have more work then they have men that can perform it.
