How is the reliability on the 8.3 Cummins?

I was just wondering how reliable the 8.3 Cummins in the M939 series trucks are? I have tried searching on SS and the Internet in general and it seems that the discussions always start going into the civy realm of things. I am considering trying to purchase one to just drive for fun and probably but a bobbed deuce bed on one.

I would like to know too. And compared to the 14lt(855ci) NHC250. Which is more durable and reliable?

Well, it's going to go into the civy realm due to the VAST number of them on the roads in commercial/civy vehicles EVERYDAY. The 8.3 is the big brother to the venerable 5.9 cummins. Lifespan of both of these engines are typically in the half million to million mile range...

Well, that's for the 8.3. I would say it's a bit more reliable than the small cam NHC 250. The 250 doesn't like to be over-reved, nor does it like sitting for long periods of time.

I read on the Cummins site that they were suppost to run 150k miles between over hauls. That figure seemed alittle on the short side to me. But it would be ok for a military application. Even @ 150k i will never have to over haul mine.....if the service records and odometer readings are correct on my truck.

My M927 has the 8.3 and I'm happy with it. It is a lot quieter than the "nifty 250" and is a lot better on fuel. It seems anemic on the hills but that's military vehicles in general. If you manually downshift at around 1800 RPM it seems to pull better. I pulled a big van trailer to the GA Rally last year and on the flats she pulled real good. If I were going to buy another 900 series I'd go with the 8.3 again.

I love the 8.3 in both my trucks. I have the fuel screw turned up a bit so it smokes a little if you mash it until the turbo spools but then it really takes off. I can rev to around 2400 rpms and they both run with the temp in range even when im getting on them. And I can listen to the radio while driving even on the highway.
