How many members are running on MEP generated power right now..?

With the power problems in the eastern US I'm wondering how many members have been running on MEP's the last few days.

Post your circumstances, what your running, how long, etc....

I am sure there are several of them, however I suspect many may not have regular internet access and many of the ones that do are busy with other things. Most likely the only ones we will hear from are the ones having trouble.

Not quite in the "right now" category but I was on my MEP-003 from about 2300 Friday till this AM at 0600. Never missed a beat and had both central AC units running plus 2 refrigerator/freezers and a straight freezer, all the lights I wanted and also the electric oven to cook a pizza. Never saw the % load go over 80. Hertz was steady to within 1Hz when checked with a separate fluke meter no matter the load. Best $1K I ever spent. :-D

I have been out of power since 21:00 Friday night. I wish I had one of your gen sets! I have a small 1800 generator that has been running refrigerator and freezer. Sure would be nice to have ac.

On another note what is the best military generator to run the whole house set up? I will be looking for one in the future.

besides one self induced hiccup saturday morning, we've also been on the 003 since about 23:00 friday. the main road near our house has a couple of trees down that took out lines in different places. they closed the road, and we really have no ETA for restoration. Pepco (power co) was saying we were already restored (yesterday), to now, where the website shows ETA of Friday at 23:00 (exactly one week from the beginning of the outage). We'll see what the reality ends up being. i'm guessing wednesday or thursday we'll have street power back..

was buying diesel 10 gallons at a time, but got tired of that, so filled a drum yesterday. hoping today to get the aux connection on the 003 hooked up so i don't have to tend to the fuel situation very often. at least now i can pump from the drum to the main tank - no funnels and cans :)

I had to run my house from my 003 last night for about 5 hours. Kept the AC going. I don't store extra diesel. I always keep the tanks on my two deuces full and pull from them with the auxilliary pump. If you have a diesel powered vehicle, this works great and you don't have to worry about the age of the stored fuel.

joediveguy: It depends on just how much you need to run, for many people a MEP-002a at 5KW is enough to run important loads, but will only run a small modern central air conditioner, a MEP-003a at 10KW is twice as much, but also tends to cost about twice as much or more, and drink twice as much fuel, .... If you can get away with not running the central air, but maybe investing in a couple of cheap window or portable air conditioners for the bedrooms, etc. (this is what I have for my house) then a MEP-002a would likely be perfect, it just depends on your needs.

I have a 002 & 003. My house is 1600 sq feet with central air. With the normal load, lights, computers, freezer & fridge it barely shows on either generator but when the air comes on it will push the 002 past 100% when it starts then settle down to about 90% and the 003 to about 50% so if you have central air most likely you will need a 10KW mep-003a. Try to find one with the ASK enclosure kit, it will reduce the noise significantly.

I also have a 002 & 003. just picked up the 003 a few weeks ago. I ran my 002 on friday and got my 003 going saturday to take over {I'm having trouble getting voltage on my main lugs on the 002}. the 003 will power my house & my machine shop :-D. I turned all of my 3 phase equipment on and the highest it went was 80% They turned our power back on on saturday afternoon. I think it helps to have one every few years to help you prepare!

The storm blew through here at about 21:30 Friday. Power went out with the first 60 MPH gust when a red oak took the line down on our road. It was cool enough that evening that we didn't bother with a generator until the next morning.

The MEP-002A is still temporarily installed on a corner of the driveway but I do have a transfer setup on the house and run a cable across the yard to the input connector. I fueled it up and got it running at about 11:00 on Saturday. The high was 101 degrees and it was working steadily all day keeping the house, fridge, and freezer cool. We stayed indoors through most of the heat of the day with me walking out to check on the generator every couple of hours after it settled in. Average indicated load was about 50% during the day. Fuel consumption was nominal. Shut down at 23:30 because the house was cool and I didn't really want it running overnight unattended.

Sunday was not as hot but definitely not a cool day either - high was about 92 where we are. Started the generator at about 8:00. Power was restored about 19:30, but I ran the generator until about 20:30 just because I didn't want to interrupt dinner to do the transfer dance.

I have two new high efficiency heat pumps in a 2300 sq ft house and the 002 will run both of them at about 70% indicated load. Compressor start up droop is a little exciting when the second one starts, though, so I generally keep downstairs cool and only cool the upstairs (bedrooms) when the downstairs system has gotten things down to temperature and wants to cycle off anyway. That way I have plenty of reserve capacity for microwaving food or some other high-current activity. Indicated load running just the downstairs A/C, one or both fridges, and stuff like lights, a TV and computer or two is around 55%, which leaves enough reserve capacity to start the well pump.

I'm really glad that I don't have an MEP-003. I don't want the extra fuel consumption and, as these are continuous-rated units, I have no worries about running the generator at 100% load continuously. Further, it's healthier for the generator to run near rated output than at <30%

I test-loaded with a resistance load to 120% indicated, which (given the 20% derate on the gauge for power factor) means that I was pulling more than 150% of rated output. The generator didn't care at all - just made some more noise. That's about 7500 watts output. I don't think it had a lot more left, and I'm sure it couldn't have started a big capacitor-start motor at that load, but I think it makes the point that these are VERY underrated generators.

I strongly recommend that you do a little measuring and figure out what your actual loads are before deciding on one or another of these generators. It's easy to shed load to keep a smaller generator happy, but an oversized generator will always be inefficient.

Packing tape on the controls or doors of hungry appliances (microwave, toaster oven, etc) keeps people from forgetting that you're on generator power and need to plan ahead. I find a piece of packing tape a lot easier (and cheaper) than hauling another 10 gallons of diesel fuel a day. Let's not forget that it may be hard/impossible to get more diesel fuel than you have on hand - so making it last isn't just an economy move.

We also went through the first steps in spousal training on generator maintenance. Like most smart people, she loves the clear instructions on the side of the control cubicle, and we went from 'voltage is pressure and current is flow' to the reality of managing resistive heating of 150 ft of feed wire on a 100 degree day to keep the voltage in spec at the house in about two hours.

She's still a little fuzzy on load management at the breaker box, but care and feeding of an MEP-002A doesn't bother her at all.

I'll reinforce the lessons this weekend with a load bank session - I've been meaning to check the governor droop adjustment anyway.

Re the pic below: Get a Kill-A-Watt and use that to set your frequency and voltage - the panel meters get you 'close enough' but aren't actually all that accurate. The pic is actually at 240V and 60 Hz on the nose and yes, I know how to adjust the meters.

And for the record: After this weekend, I think this was the best $550 I've ever spent.

THanks all for the input. I think I'll try an 002 for starters.

I worry about running the well pump, freezer, fridge and or oilfurnace or 100,000 btu window AC unit depending on the season.

i'm going to do the Watts used by each appliances to figure out how much the above mentioned appliances use.

It sounds like the 002 is happiest running near100% load:-D

I’ve been without power since 1830 Friday evening. I ran the MEP-003a for about 6 hours Friday night, then I shut it down for the night due to lack of fuel. Fired her back up at 0700 Saturday morning and restocked the fuel supply. It’s been chugging along for the past 71 hours (as of this writing) without issue.

The highest load I’ve seen on it so far was about 30-35% with the geothermal heat pump cycled on and the well pump running. I’m sure that will go up considerably today as the wife is going to be doing some laundry, those electric clothes dryers sure do eat up the KW’s. With all of that I’ve been averaging about 0.63 gallons per hour fuel consumption.

Still no internet at home either, I’m at work today.

Hope your power comes back on soon, Speddmon. I've been in that situation before (in my case, during the middle of Winter). Life's meaning changes from doing what you normally do to doing not much besides feeding and maintaining a genset.

It's typical US Army style logic: If it says 5KW output, that means 5000.00 watts all the time it's running under any deployable circumstances or the manufacturer failed to meet the terms of contract. Likewise the % load gauge, which is calibrated assuming a power factor of 0.8, which means that it reads low for a more resistive load. If your MEP quit when it was running at rated output then it was going to quit anyway. I don't know what the QMC acceptance testing criteria were, but I have my guesses...

Unless you have a really big/old freezer, you can mostly discount it as a load. Likewise, oil furnaces tend to be pretty easy loads because the blower cycles on and off at different times than the burner does.

Well pumps are fairly difficult loads, but the MEP is designed to cope with things like that. An easy workaround is to use a big pressure tank and schedule well pump runs into air conditioning off cycles if you have a big central A/C.

If your pressure tank is in the 50 gallon range you probably have an hour's worth of normal use in a full tank barring bathing and laundry (check the Schrader valve on top to make sure your air chamber is at the recommended pressure when empty). I manually trip the pressure switch to top it up before I shut the pump off to do filter maintenance or whatever and the family never notices.

Are you sure you didn't add a zero to that window unit? The biggest window A/C I've ever seen was about 20,000 BTU. I've got a 12K I put in the garage and it's about all I can lift.

There are standard formulas for estimating generator capacity required based on amount and type of loads. Just get the nameplate horsepower ratings of the motors and the wattage rating of heaters, etc and you have most of your data. Just remember that you've got more than 7500 watts surge capacity with an MEP-002A and 15KW+ surge capacity on an MEP-003A, so ratings for consumer gasoline generators will be very pessimistic.

WOOHOO...Finally got internet back at home!!!!!!!!!

Still no power though. "The Beast" has been going strong for the past 85.5 hours without a break or a blip in the output. Have I ever mentioned that I LOVE my MEP-003a's??????

My Mep-701 is churning power in Ohio for a buddy. Checked on him today and he said he has burned only 11 gallons of diesel over the 4 days without power- He runs in for 3-4 hours at a time to keep the fridge and freezer cold. uses TV and fans when running
We were talking about adding a transfer switch to the house as he said the generator has a new home if I ever need it he would loan it to me. He has only used about 10-15% of it load cababilities.

Well, still no utility power, so I just had to shut her down for about 20 minutes to change the oil and filter. Been running strong and solid for 4 1/2 days, so it's past the recommended 100 hour interval for service. The oil change could not have been easier. The modified spin on oil filter makes that a breeze. Fresh oil and filter and back up and producing power....Life goes on

my power came back yesterday afternoon and i just did an oil/filter change at around 95 hours.. after, i walked inside, washed my hands, and ordered the wix 24123 (& filter 51515) spin-on adapter kit. after buttoning it all back up, fired it up to make sure all was good..and the canister gasket was askew..oil everywhere. i hate cartridge filters (but love my MEP)!
