Yesterday I helped a friend pull his auction win M819 tractor wrecker home. The HET handled it just fine. The 819 is cool! It'll be a neat restoration.
Thank you for saving that one. I was watching it close and had to resist saying anything on here before it closed. Do tell your friend to take more pictures and video, they are a neat truck!

I used a set of towing lights that I have. Since the cable for the lights has a military 24v 12 pin connector and the HET only has a commercial 12v 7 pin connector by the pintle hitch, I had to run the cable up to the military connector by the fifth wheel. They work very well.
I've seen these towing lights on stone web sites there in the USA. I did not know they had 24 volt. I will check into these.

2100 RPM in 1st gear is 9 mph
2100 RPM in 2nd gear is 14 mph

This made me curious about how the HET compares to something like a Kenworth T800 with a similar wheel base and to other mv.

The TM_9-2320-360-10 lists a 67.9' turning radius for HET without trailer, wheel base appears to be 215". The Kenworth book didn't list any tridems, but heavy tandems with 220" wheelbase had turning radius of 44'. I thought maybe the M920 would be better with the airlift axle, but it is actually worse, so the M1070 was a pretty big improvement.

Thanks for posting the two side by side. I think this is the only photo of the two generations ever taken. Quick question, why does the SO have a huge piece of flex coming off the stack?

I don't know, I've wondered about it every time I've seen the truck.

Doesn't look like it in the the picture but a M1070 will tow a M747 trailer with the landing gear kicked back. First question I asked Soni when he go his.

It just sits there, rotting in the sun. A lot of the tires are very cracked.

Yeah, I think Soni said you have to remove the mudflaps on the 1070.

Such a shame, rig like that should be preserved and make the rally circuit.

That's a correct statement, although if memory serves he made it seam the chore to fold the gear all the way back. The flap removal is almost SOP by comparison.

I came across a deal on some JW Speaker 8700 headlights that I could not pass up. I had some Trucklite LED headlights ready to put into the HET, but was waiting because I hadn't had time yet to make the necessary bracket to kick the headlight guards out. The JW Speaker headlights do not need the bracket and I think they look cool, so I got some. When it gets dark, I'll drive around and see if they're aimed correctly.
