Guys, be real careful here. The spelter and plug ends give 100% rope strength, the wedge and socket does not, (75 to 80% strength)and the winch rope is operated with a much lower design factor, so giving up 25% is not a good idea. Yes they are easier, but. If the rope end has come off, I would seriously inspect the remainder of the rope for suitability for service.

Hope it is not like this one, which was still in service.
Winch line is can be very dangerous. Proof whatever you use to assure that it meets the need, before using in the field.
