Pics of my actual pump are on page 1 of this thread (sorry for jacking it maddawg308! But its in keeping with your pump thread)

Tell me something...I know all pumps are different, and I just want to eliminate the simple before going too deep. I know the filters were replaced not all that long ago, maybe 1500 miles. The truck has been exactly like this the whole time I owned it, which is aprox. 1300 miles. Part of me wants to swap out the filters anyway, but I don't see where it can be a filter issue. I'm obviously getting fuel, as there is smoke. And the boost is low, pointing to a pump or turbo issue.

That might be the LDS 465-1 troubleshooting manual which states 18-20Hg art 2400RPM (~9-10ps) and 8-10" Hg at 1600RPM(~4-5psi). See page 34. It would seem that another 200RPM (2600rpm) would create about 12psi. I found that if my LD w/D turbo set at this level will create excessive EGTs only under heavy towed loads and up hill and at the lower end of the operating range. So it is pretty safe, which would seem how the engineers would have wanted the LDS. Note-less boost at lower RPM means less air, less power and higher EGT.

I moved the droop screw for more fuel but got very little extra power [at lower rpm]. I did see a bit more smoke down low. There may be little to gain because there is just no air down there. The std LDS turbo has a different, bigger, compressor than the C or D so it may be capable of making more low end. My LD w/D doesn't seem to start building until 7-8 . It is very progressive. If you can see it in the LDS power curve where it is strongest at red line(see below)

Running 15-16psi at 2600 things got rather hot on flat ground.

All this fueling will reduce fuel economy but it sure is fun to drive.

Now I have alot of low end torque,it pulls hard now at lower RPMs.When I get to around 2100 on,its not as noticeable on power.It pulls hard in all gears at lower RPMs.fat lady sings

Thats all i want is a little low end power. I've driven my father's Deuces and laugh that they have no power (compared to a typical newer diesel truck) but mine has about half the power of his! I need to sell this truck soon, so i just want to make sure its tuned right. It was a LOOONG trip home from Kentucky when I would have to drop to 4th and even 3rd gear for even mild hills. I came over Killington in VT in 2nd gear IIRC. Its better after yesterday's adjustments, but still not right.

You might check the fuel pressure.It sounds like a fuel problem.Or turbo:beer:

I tried adjusting the droop screw today, with no change, I still can't get more than 2psi pressure. I guess I'm going to try changing the turbo with a C turbo.

Well I think I found my problem. I hooked up my boost gauge today and took it for a spin, and going uphill I can only get about 6 lbs. of boost, max. From what I saw in another thread, I should be seeing 8.84 to 9.82 psi boost at 1600 rpms. Well at 1600 I'm closer to 4 lbs. or less.

Now...am I looking at just adjusting the droop screw, or is it a governor issue? I'm thinking droop, because I'm obviously getting fuel now, as i can see smoke while on hills.

I think the next step is to adjust the droop screw, and I think I'll back off the fuel until I get that corrected. but I'm going to wait until I get a response from someone in case I'm headed the wrong direction here.

BTW, its a quality gauge I used, Isspro, so it shouldn't be gauge error.

No you are close to factory specs for 1600-2000rpm You could bring it up to 5-6. Not all pumps use the droop screw from what I have seen. They use the smoke cam. To correct a later post the smoke cam can run 40* to 70* on different pumps. Buy lessening the angle you bring the Gov./fuel rod closer to the wedge plate and increase the boost. Guess I need to make a vid on how to get full fuel.

BTW you shouldnt have to "reem" out a hole for pipe thread if you just use the designated drill for that tap(as far as i have ever experianced at work) , usually you can buy the drill bit and tap together so u dont have to guess....although the thinner the material the more scetchy this can get , but i dont think a exhaust manifold is too thin ........

Thanks. I got a shock to myself when I was doing more work on the truck trying to track this down. I guess I may not have an issue...although I still think the engine should rev to 25-2600 fairly easily (just doesn't want to rev past 2200). The engine data plate was very faded with the black worn completely off it, so i couldn't read any info. Well I found a small plate attached to the rear of one of the inj. pump screws, so I pulled the screw and read the plate- LDS 427-2. Hmmmm.....not the 465 I thought it was! I further confirmed this when I did a search on here about the LS 427 and ID'd the larger turbo I have.

Every day is a new education for me!

So...maybe my boost level is correct, but why would this not want to rev? If there is even the slightest incline in 2nd or 3rd gear it won't go past 2100-2200 rpms. If I'm on flat ground it will slowly go up to 2500.

How come you guys have to turn screws on your LDT motors to get more power?:cookoo: Have you not heard of the "50 cent trick"? When I was in the Army and had a Deuce as my daily driver, us mechanics used to give them the 50 cent trick. It is very simple to do and you dont have to risk turning some screw. We called it 50 cent because we used two quarters. Now, we got cheep and started using washers that were the thickness of the quarters. Simply remove the little round cover with the three bolts on the top of the injector pump, pull out the spring, drop in the quarters/washers, replace the spring, tighten the bolts and VOILA!!! You have more power and more smoke. You can take out one washer if you like for less power. Makes a huge difference. And for SURE have a pyrometer to monitor the temp. My C turbo screams like a jet engine!!

your doing the same thing with the washers.... adjusting the fuel rates..... Turning the adjuster is ezer and does not require you to remove anything or open up the pump housing.

"I just learned about this techique from an old warhorse mech near FT Lewis,Wa yesterday.He stated the same things as Westech;dont' allow that droopscrew to rotate and or drop!Also,he and made task specific wrench for that job by grinding down a wrench to fit.Thanks for this post guys.Good info"

The above statement does not sound easier or less risky than opening the top of the pump.
