how to use the part numbers in TM to get auto parts

Hey, I'm using the TM9-2320-289-34P to identify parts I need to buy for a M1008 drivetrain (and many thanks again to the Admin who posted these TM's!). How do you use the Part Number or Usable on Codes to find the right part number for an auto parts store?

Maybe this is kind of a dumb question and I have overlooked the explanation on this site somewhere.

I suck when it comes to posting PDF pics to this (or any site) but I'll do an example below for the vaccum modulator.

So using TM 9-2320-289-34P (P for parts manual)
Figure 70 is the vacuum modulator with a item number of 8 in the drawling. The cage code (manufacturer code) is 11862. Using BINCS

http://www.dlis.dla.mil/bincs/begin_search.aspx

punch in that code in the search and you get

CAGE Information
Company Name:GENERAL MOTORS CORP
CHEVROLET MOTOR DIV
SPECIAL PRODUCTS DEPT
Status:Obsolete Record
Parent CAGE:24617
Address:30007 VAN DYKE
P.O. Box:
City:WARREN
Zip:48090
CAO-ADP:S2305A-HQ0337
State:MI
County:MACOMB
Voice Phone Number:
Fax Phone Number:
Date CAGE Code Established:10/25/1974
Last Updated:6/28/1999
Point of Contact:
Company Web Site:

Then it is nothing more than using the part number from the manufacture which in this case is 359917. Then you can crossreference that with napa or other company numbers as needed.

The more difficult is when you have the cage code only come up a govt as the manufacturer. Then you have to use the NSN with FEDLOG or AMDF to find out the manufacturer. Hope this helps.

In the case of the CUCV, the part number is usually a General Motors, Chevrolet, or AC Delco part number.

A Google search including the part number and a word(describing the part) like "filter" or "seal", should help you find what you need.

Read the first few pages of the parts manual to find the section that covers the U.O.C. (usable on code). There is a chart that gives the different models and what the code is.

And if this code is listed on a part, then you know what model it applies to.

This works on alot of different trucks.

Yep forgot about that since that manual covers the entire CUCV series. I think the M1009 is code 209.

If there is no usable code, such as the example above, then it applies to all.

For the old timers, Medlog speak with fork tongue.

There is a whole section in the front of the TMs that explain the finer points of the TM.
Here are the UOC codes for the CUCV family of vehicles.

Code . . . .Used On

208 - M1008A1,Type “B” Cargo, Troop Seat

209 - M1009, Type “A” Utility

210 - M1010, Type “C” Ambulance

230 - M 1028, Type “E” Shelter Carrier

252 - M1028A1,Type’’F” Shelter Carrier w/PTO

254 - M1028A2, Type “F” Shelter Carrier w/PTO DRW

256 - M1028A3, Type “E” Shelter Carrier DRW

Well I do consider myself lucky. Just like certain other folks that very, very, very recently posted, I also look like my avatar.

Awe crapp. I remembered this thread and the link to BINCS. I'm searching for parts for the M1010 spot/search light so I figured I would plug in the cage code from the TM and determine the MFR. Plugged in 84319 and got this:
MILITARY SPECIFICATIONS
PROMULGATED BY MILITARY
DEPARTMENTS/AGENCIES
UNDER AUTHORITY OF DEFENSE
STANDARDIZATION MANUAL 4120 3-M

Some luck!
