Well bubbafy may be used more in certain circles . The actual videos from when I went to trade school and got my certifications was a video series called "Primative Pete" and a hammer and chisel was one of the methods we were taught not to use and had it's own video on it. These videos pre-date the internet but probably are online somewhere
They were similar to articles in P.S. magazine . But what do I know I only spent the last 25 or so winter working Rockwells out concrete mixers that are about twice the size of 5 tons , all with air over hydraulic lockers also.
Truthfully I'm a bit jealous. I really wish I knew how to work on big trucks. I get stuck digging through the TMs just trying to figure out how to get the stupid wheel off. The TMs have been extremely helpful to me and showed me the way. That made me curious of why you'd suggest we throw them away. I can't do anything without them. I got what your saying though. Experience trumps some old dusty manuals. Now I just need to find some experience...

I appreciate the help again! I'll figure all this out one of these days.

Their is a big difference between "field repairs" and just cobbling everything to start with. Chisels will take chunks out of the nut , they will cause the nut to expand thickness ever so slightly at the chisel point or wrap the nut so it doesn't provide a even pressure like a undamaged nut will . You can file them flat when they are off , but using a chisel to reinstall will cause damage again
ever so slight. Some people cobble everything , I just don't see a reason to do it when what your working on is sitting in a driveway or a shop. I also don't see it as a good way to help someone asking where to get the correct tool for basic maintenance on a vehicle. When somebody wants to learn something you teach them the correct way , if you really care about helping them.

Chisels are on sale at Harbor Freight. Just sayin'.....but not the 8 sided ones.:driver::driver:

Guess ill have to do all my rear brakes tomorrow with the belief that a chisel will "take chunks out" of everything. Must baffle some folks to turn that thing around and use it. I can honestly say that I don't even own a torque wrench. Sad I know. I only have a torque stick for lug nuts and the rest I guess I will just have to wing it with the Dewalt XR gun.

My chisel set cost way more than a hub socket , no way am I beating on the blade of my chisels . The two ends of a chisel are also hardened to different specs. I don't buyer harbor junk except for a last resort , the local store dons't like to honor their warranties It took me close to 9 months to get a crowfoot socket replaced .
