Humvee Leaking Hub?

These pictures taken of the Right Rear Tire. It looks like it's leaking some fluid from the hub??? Anyone know what this might be? Thanks!

That gear oil, its in the hub.

It can leak from the input seal where the halfshaft enters, the output seal where the spindle exits, the plugs, the steering arm cover, or the inspection cover.

With that, it is likely from a seal.

I have the same issue - todays chore is to take a closer look at the leak.

If it's the input seal... I can say that it's 87 times easier to undo the upper ball joint than remove the halfshaft from the diff.

mine looks like it's either the little plastic buttons? or the inspection cover. Everything north of that appears not to be greasy wet. I'll remove the rear wheel and do this today.

Tokarev. Was thinking about picking one of those up but instead classic firearms has some k31 and k1911 rifles in and bought two of those instead. Maybe I'll pick up a Tokarev in the future.

You have to clean it all off, run it and see where the source is. But having seen this god knows how many times "last week" it was the spindle output seal.
the upper input seal is not wet, meaning it's not constantly submersed like the output seal, they just seep or stay damp, once the lower fails, it will get worse quickly. Part of my PMCS is to always keep the inner rim clean and dry so as to observe any fluids from the hubs...has never failed me.

The service is done but I'm guessing, now that you mention it, the output seals must be the culprit as the wet ran up to them. The inspection plate and its components have been cleaned and reinstalled. I'll run the vehicle with the expectation its the seals you've mentioned. I'll order some now. Thanks.

if you are doing the output seals, you are going to have to remove the spindle.

that entails removing the steering arm cover, removing the spindle nut (you may need a special tool for that depending on what kind of nut you have), then removing the spindle.

retorquing the spindle correctly is important because if you don't your wheel can fall off.

depending on the spindle nut you have, you will want to order a new spindle retaining washer and a new nut.

If folks really want to make sure there wheel don't fall off, I suggest buying BlueHummers locking spindle nut setup.ive installed many and they are a must. But the price is quite high, like 80.00 per wheel.

Just for future reference don`t forget that a blocked vent line can cause hub seals to leak.

I'm looking at the service manual and the names aren't quite matching for what I think I may need. I'm guessing I need the Geared hub output seals and is there any other seals or gaskets that I should be buying at this time to complete the service? That set is 45 dollars. Yikes.

So I know this subject has been covered ad nauseum...truck has 10k miles, of which I have contributed 1k. Started daily and driven at least weekly. Out of the blue comes the dreaded g/o leak with has splattered the tire, and unfortunately, the body as well. Stuff is hard to clean off.

Do you have a specific question? A search of the forum will get you a part number for the replacement boot.
I'm not sure what you want from the grease mess, but it's part of the PMCS before any use especially daily driving any vehicle...

Yeah i think it is just the hmmwv people that think everything that happens to their vehicle isnt suppose to happen or is really weird. Lots of these posts that make no point. In reality if my truck isnt leaking something shes been sitting too long.
